About Dan & Zuleica

Hi, my name is Dan Thornton. I am a former Secondary Education (Junior high and high school) art teacher. While teaching in the public school system, I developed one of the early art therapy curriculums for youth. I self-published a creative thinking course titled, "Drawing on Creativity".

In addition to public school teaching, I taught several drawing and painting classes through college and university community education programs. My forte is in landscape painting, working in formats from one-inch miniatures to full size wall murals. A limited sample of my work may be found at danthornton.art.

Aesthetic principles, design, form and function are all important to me. I often traverse my artistic pursuits across multiple mediums of expression: architectural design, graphic design, music composition, creative writing, and of course fine art painting and drawing.

My wife Zuleica is from Venice, Italy. She studied Art History and English at Ca'Foscari University in Venice. In Italy she studied first-hand, in real life the great works of Renaissance masters. She later moved to the United States and continued her University studies at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo. There she enrolled in a drawing class where she discovered her love and natural talent for drawing that lead her to painting. Zuleica's Art History experience coupled with her fundamental drawing practice, love for the beauty she sees in nature, and her keen eye for composition, and a little help from her personal tutor has helped her to create colorful inspiring paintings in oils and in acrylics. Together Dan and Zuleica Thornton tutor individual art students who seek one-on-one instruction as they progress in their fine art adventures. We also teach small group classes of no more than four students per class providing opportunity for family and friends to take our classes together maintaining an optimum focus on individual instruction at every level from beginners to professional artist.

I love our beautiful earth, and I feel a strong sense of responsibility to keep it clean, beautiful, and resourceful for generations to come. I value the aesthetic beauty of good form and practical function of things made. I am constantly enthused about new discoveries and inventive creations. I believe the works of humankind should both please the eye and gladden the sole. I joy in making things beautiful and useful within sound judgment, not in excess, neither by extortion, but in greater joy and harmony.

I have a formal BA degree in Art and Secondary Education. I have a going on 70-year life degree as an artist.

About the lesson

My Assessment:

I learn as much as I can about my potential student, their interests in art, their experience with art, their desires and expectations in their pursuit of art experience. There are so many diverse ways to experience art and express oneself through artistic channels; but they all have fundamentally basic principles that apply, and I strive to connect with the student's current level of experience and carry forward from there.

Young and old. Beginner and advanced. I like individual tutoring because I can focus on the students' individual interests and needs. For the comfort of the student, and because I teach one-on-one, Zuleica joins with me in each lesson that involves teaching any child, and youth and adult students of the opposite gender. I require a parent or legal guardian to attend when teaching under age children and youth. We have a very nice art studio that students find comfortable and artistically motivating. I want to keep it that way.

Don't be shy about learning to draw and/or paint. the experience will open your life to all kinds of wonderful experiences.

Details

Currently, my rate is $25 per hour for one student. Two to four students attending together forming a small class will pay $10 each, i.e., a husband and wife attending together would pay $25 + $10 = $35 per hour instead of fifty. A family or small group of friends of three or four together will pay $45 for three students or $55 for four students. More than four students would be scheduled for two or more class times keeping the class sizes no larger than four students.
