Customized Lesson Agendas
In addition to custom playlists, there are 20+ learning modules that we go through to find what motivates students the most. These include games, exercises, drum notation, ensembles/jams, and performances.
-Games:
Waterfall Rounds, Skateboarding, Level Up Challenge, Catapult, Battleship, Copy/Paste, Music to my Ears, Elimination game, Battle Jams
-Exercises:
Isolation Exercises, Note4Note, Hurricanes, Call and Response, Jumpstarts, Metronome Training, Drum Pad Rudiments
-Drum Notation:
Song Structures, Sight reading, Full Scores
-Ensembles:
Family bands, Talent Show Ensembles, Trading 4’s (Jazz Improv phrasing)
With younger students I use game-based activities that double as exercises and stack points to track progress. For example with Waterfall Rounds, we simultaneously play drum fills without knocking into each other; this builds coordination, stick control, sticking patterns, tempo control, and more.
For drum notation, we choose songs to learn from the student’s personalized playlist (this can include any song they choose). For beginners, I write the musical notation for just one drum beat to start, and then we can advance to multiple beats, then to song structure, then down the line to full scores. Once students advance to Song Structure, they will have their own manuscript book with all of their songs.
As for the ensembles/jams, I play keyboard and lead them by conducting with the count, which the students pick up and start counting themselves. Once they can count the phrasing, we work on instrumental improvisation and song structure. If friends or family play instruments as well, we can arrange them to be part of the ensemble module of the lesson, especially for possible talent shows.
As for performances, I hold monthly student drum shows at the Bixby Park stage in Long Beach.
Currently, my students age range is 6-15. My top student is 14 and is learning Tom Sawyer. My youngest student plays the "copy/paste" and "battle jams" games.
I also teach music classes to middle school and elementary school students. I simplify the theory to make it fun, allowing students to enjoy jumping into something brand new.
Try out different teachers before settling with someone. It takes some extra time and research but it pays off in the long-run. I had bad teachers when I first started out and it was such a waste of time. It's not worth it!
The Star Earth Day Festival is an event we perform at every year. The event includes amusement park rides, arcade games, food vendors, wild animals, and three big stages.

Perfect! Ed is fantastic with my 6-year-old legend. He is professional, intuitive, creative and fun. Highly recommend him to all kind humans.
Perfect! My son started lessons with Ed in June and continue them today. During this crazy pandemic, we are so grateful to have such a wonderful teacher. Ed has made a great connection with my son even though it is online. My son has been learning through playing, and the improvements are noticeable. Since he is only 6, Ed has made the learning experience fun and playful and within my sons ability at his age. Outside of drums, Ed has also helped my son with stage fright and tips on overcoming the fear. It takes a great teacher to form such a fun relationship with a student through distance learning, and have the lessons transpire well. I would highly recommend Ed for lessons!
Perfect! My son is 8 years old. From my perspective lessons for kids at that age must be fun in order to maintain attention and keep him interested.
Ed does both and more. He starts by incorporating games into his lessons that made the lesson fun while teaching him rhythm. My son got to choose the songs he already likes to listen to, which helps keep him motivated.
When he can no longer keep it together from an attention standpoint Ed focuses on other fun games like learning to flip and twist the drum sticks, something anyone who has seen a drummer do, always wanted to learn.
As lessons progressed, my son has been able to jam along with me while I play along on guitar in a short period of time.
Ed has incorporated accountability and expectations into the lessons as my son has progressed which has ensured he himself continues to progress. One method has been to measure his mistakes within the play through of an entire song compared to his other classmates at similar ages. This also motivates my son to practice and to try hard.
I can’t say enough how much I recommend Ed to anyone who has a child who wants to learn drums. My son had a drum set but mostly used it to make as much noise as possible when he was bored. I tried to teach him basics to play along with me but didn’t get anywhere.
Ed has changed all of that and has my son playing along, and changing beats with the changes within the song in only a few months.
He doesn’t take a cookie cutter approach to his teaching either. His strategy changes as my son develops which gives me confidence in him. Plus my son idolizes him and looks forward to his lessons!!
Once again I highly recommend Ed for anyone who would like to have their child learn the drums.Perfect! Ed is an incredibly patient, fun, creative drum instructor. Our 13-year-old daughter is learning a lot and having fun at the same time!

Ed is terrific. No other music teachers I’ve known have had his enthusiasm and understanding of how to connect with kids in a way that makes learning music a pleasure not a chore.

You made my whole day!Ed is amazing. He focuses on what songs the kids want to learn and what their interests are. Whether the kids are on bucket drums or a drum set, he keeps it fun!!
As a former educator, I highly recommend Ed’s Drum Lessons. Ed teaches my 9-year-old much more than drums. He uses drums to teach patience, confidence, and perseverance. He engages with his students with a high amount of energy and enthusiasm, which motivates his students and makes them eager to learn. He has helped my shy, slow to warm son, come out of his shell, and become eager to perform drums in front of an audience. Never in my wildest dreams did I think he would be able to do that! Every lesson that Ed instructs is teacher-directed and student lead, since he listens to and plans his lessons based on the needs of the individual student. A++++
I definitely recommend using Ed as a drum instructor. Both my daughters, ages 10 and 12, have been receiving drum lessons from Ed for several years now. We had tried 3 other instructors with bad results but got lucky when we found Ed. He is very thorough and patient while giving lessons. He has a great attitude and really knows his stuff. He knows many styles of drumming. Just pick a song, give him a week to study it, and by the next lesson he's ready to teach it. My daughters always look forward to their lesson with Ed.
