About Karen
I am a retired social studies teacher and I am proud to say that my students, including special education, had a 90% passing rate on both the 10 and 11 grade regents. I am certified in secondary social studies, grades 7-12 and life span special education. I taught in the public education system for 23 years. I have a BA in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Stony Brook Univ. I graduated with a 3.75 gpa. I have a Masters in Life Span Special Education from Dowling College, gpa 3.90. Prior to teaching I worked as a substance abuse prevention, intervention and referral counceler.
I was working in a hs in a community youth program as a drug/alcohol counselor. I realized i was fighting a losing battle because if these children didn't have the ways and means to take care of themselves in society, they would stay stuck. Education seemed to be a way up and out but so many students were turned off by school. i decided to get my masters in spec.ed., get certified in sp. ed. and soc. studies. and use my counseling skills and education to become a teacher to the students i was counseling.
