About Daniel

Hi there! My name is Daniel, and I'm a current Master's Student at NYU studying Music Technology, with an undergraduate degree in Audio Engineering from the University of Michigan.

I've been delving into topics in and around the Audio Engineering world for over 15 years. I know what it's like to cultivate and hone the skills - both technical and creative - to grow from a kid who loved making music on his laptop to being involved in award-winning games, virtual reality experiences presented on the international stage, and everything in-between: from sheet music to the recording studio.

As far as topics go, I have a breadth of experience in:

I believe that each and every aspect of sound and audio deserves full attention, and each field, discipline, and medium has special quirks that make a unique technical challenge that always inspires great creativity. I love passing along an inspired perspective on this wondrously complex field while teaching the necessary fundamentals to form a rock-solid foundation, all with a focus on practical career building and having a plan in sight.

The interdisciplinary nature of it all. Having experienced so many different facets of the professional audio world, the most wonderful thing is how it all ties together, and every lesson you learn in one direction informs a decision in the other.

Whether it's studying how your favorite movie was filmed, your favorite band was recorded, or your favorite game was made, bits and pieces you pick up along the way keep you learning and growing throughout life.

I originally wanted to be a Chorus Teacher - solidified after taking over my own choir class to bridge a gap in teachers - but left the Vocal world for the technological. Since then I have always found myself in instructional / mentor roles (teaching music lessons for a few years as well), and thoroughly enjoy the process of cultivating passion and capability in whatever field it may be.

Additionally, my first three years at UM were as a Choral Music Education major learning how to teach.

About the lesson

The most important thing with a new student is clarifying their goals. Do they want to learn to mix their band just for fun? Are they trying to put together an application portfolio for College? Something else? With any focus in mind, from there we can work together to establish a 'curriculum' of sorts, tailored to what they want to achieve, and work from there! Sound and Music are joyful art forms as much as they are careers, so I want to make sure a student - whether it be for hobby or career - feels like they're making progress the way they want to.

Youtube and Google are free. Not to give away my own work, but rather to highlight the abundance of resources out there waiting for you to sink your teeth into! However, those resources can be boring, unfocused, and highly impersonal. Learning the 'what' is always more difficult without the 'why', and with my breadth of experience across multiple different "industries", connecting the dots and helping you plan your path to success is something no google search can do for you.

1) What inspires you to learn? What are your "WOW" moments that make you say 'I want to learn this!' ?

2) What do you want to do with these skills? Is it because it's awesome and fun? Do you want broader experience? Do you want it to be your career?

3a) (if you want a career in this) Describe your dream job. What kind of media will you work on (games, film, installations, programs)? What genre within that medium? How big of a studio? Do you want to work alone or have a small company?

3b) (if you don't want a career in this) What's the most fun part of this to you? What are some cool side projects you want to make? How do you see yourself spending an afternoon with this skill, 15 years down the line?

Currently I'm available at a rate of $50/hr or $30/half hour, regardless of topics. Things such as lesson planning, answering off-hand questions a student may have (within reason) are not billable.
