About Faith

I graduated with a BA in professional and technical writing from SVSU in 2017. This field is unique in its emphasis on collaboration-- much of the time in the classroom was spent not on lectures, but rather on workshopping our peers' material. This has provided me with the skills to not only help others improve their syntax, but to focus on ways to elevate and further analyze their own ideas expressed in their writing.

Too often, teachers focus only on the grammatical side of writing. It becomes a boring, tedious, and rigid process that doesn't seem to have much value for daily life. Who cares whether I choose to use an oxford comma or not?

Instead, I view learning to write as an essential piece to the overall puzzle of learning to think critically about the world around us. Students should spend their time focusing on the content of their work. Their arguments and the evidence they use to support them are where the intrinsic value lies.

I love being able to help others explore their ideas and see just how satisfying it can be to structure a well-laid argument in the form of an essay.

I truly love my field, and I love helping others improve their skills in it. While I have not formally held a teaching position, I am currently working towards the goal of getting a certification to teach English at the secondary level.

I graduated from SVSU in 2017 with a BA in professional and technical writing. During my education, I took a wide variety of classes (e.g. poetry writing, instruction writing, web writing, topics in rhetoric) that have given me a broad understanding in how to effectively communicate through writing.

I currently work as a marketing and communications coordinator where I use and hone these skills on a daily basis.

About the lesson

My first step would be to establish my student's needs and goals they hope to accomplish by hiring me. This will help me know how to best dedicate our time together.

Once these goals are established, I would simply get to work. If there is a current assignment my student is working on, we would spend our energy on that. If there is nothing currently in the works, I would start the process for writing either a personal narrative or persuasive essay.

When we have decided what we will be working on, I will begin the standard essay development practices. We will brainstorm ideas, develop a thesis and supporting arguments, create an outline, and begin any necessary research. We will produce drafts and workshop them until my student is happy and proud of the final product.

Find someone who values your ideas and wants to help you explore them. Writing is so much more than punctuation and spelling.
