About Melissa

College application essays are unlike your typical high school essays. Most students have not had much experience writing about themselves in a way that showcases their best qualities along with their writing ability. In my three years of working in admissions at an Ivy League university, I have read several hundred college essays and supplemental statements that run the gamut from unremarkable to extraordinary. I can help your student find their voice and their story as they craft a compelling, unique, and effective essay. When working with a student, I ask a lot of questions to better understand them and their goals. I help the student to identify the potential theme(s) of their essay, deepen their self-reflection, and make new connections. I assign homework after each session tailored to the needs of the student at that time. Follow-up sessions offer opportunities for additional feedback, to review essay progress and homework assignments, and to ask and answer new questions.

I have over a decade of higher education experience that includes work in admissions, academic advising, academic coaching, and teaching. I look foward to helping your student reach their personal and academic goals.

Writing can feel like a daunting task. I love how surprised students are when I reveal how close they are to their word count after just the initial brainstorming session. I enjoy watching students build confidence and satisfaction as they improve their writing.

I have a bachelor of arts degree in Anthropology from Brown University and a master of education degree in College Student Affairs from Rutgers University.

I have over a decade of experience working in higher education in the areas of admissions, academic advising, academic coaching, and teaching.

About the lesson

In our first session, my number one goal is to get to know you. I want to understand your interests, goals, motivations, and values. By asking questions and listening, I am better able to help you identify potential themes and connections that could grow into an effective essay.
