About Everett

I am Associate Principal/Third Horn with the Virginia Symphony, with whom I perform regularly all across the Hampton Roads region.

I think music should be fun, and I try to create a friendly, personalized environment in all of my lessons.

I am happy to work with your busy schedule to find a lesson time each week, and I am able to drive to your home for lessons when it is convenient for you.

I’m very active in my own personal practicing and musical growth, so I’m always coming up with new ideas to share with my students.

I embrace the challenge of creatively solving problems that my students come to me with.

I do my best to inspire students and help them to get the most out of their time playing the horn, whether that ends up being a few years in school or a lifetime.

I received my Bachelor of Music degree from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where I studied with Jeff Nelsen, Dale Clevenger, and Richard Seraphinoff. I then went on to complete my Master of Music degree at Rice University, studying with William VerMeulen. In Houston I taught a lot of young horn players, both in private lessons and in group classes.

One-on-one attention

Working one-on-one with a teacher, while focusing on issues specific to your instrument, is invaluable for a developing young musician. Students who have regular, specialized instruction progress much faster on their instruments than students who don’t.

Every music student has different strengths, weaknesses, and interests. Private lessons are tailored to each person’s needs.

By setting weekly goals and working on appropriately challenging material, students taking private lessons learn skills that carry over into all areas of their lives.

In addition to learning instrument technique, students who take private lessons learn musical skills like ear training, music theory, rhythm, performance skills, listening skills, and musicianship.

Horn is the best instrument! Unfortunately, in band music, the horn parts are often in the background and are not always used in the most interesting or exciting ways. In lessons, you will get to play solos, duets, and other fun and challenging music.
