About Pascal

Hi, my name is Pascal. I am a first-year student at Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying vocal performance and professional music.

As the son of American parents living in Germany, I have been bilingual my entire life. Growing up, my family spoke English and German at home, but I attended German schools from preschool onward and graduated from German high school (Gymnasium) in 2018. Everyone in my family loves languages – my mom is a translator and my dad is an actor – and I always excelled in my language classes at school, learning French and Spanish as well as English and German.

Even though I’m only 19, I already have a lot of experience tutoring language students. When I was in high school, I tutored non-native speakers in English and French and also served as a mentor to refugee children who had recently arrived in Germany.

During my first college semester, I have continued my tutoring career by helping ESL students at Berklee, and by helping people learn German. This has been a great and rewarding experience. I love sharing my knowledge and ability with others and helping them learn and gain confidence. I am a friendly, outgoing and compassionate person and I can relate well to the struggles of foreign students, immigrants and beginners.

I have a truly native level of knowledge in both my primary languages. When I speak English I sound like an American, and when I speak German I sound like a German. I attended the most advanced form of high school in Germany and was a very good student. I have a deep understanding of the German language, its underlying structure and rules, as well as German society, history and culture. I teach German from the perspective of an American who grew up in Germany.

The thing I enjoy most about my job is seeing m students succeed. I want them to be able to converse, read and write freely in German ane English.

When I see that a student is making progress that is the biggest reward I could ask for.

I've also gotten to meet interesting people from around the world through my work. There is nothing like broadening your own horizons while helping others broaden theirs.

My approach to tutoring languages is different for every student: I always try to see where each person needs the most help.
With students enrolled in college or school English or German classes, I begin by going through their classwork and any homework they may have with them. If there is none that day, I am always working on determining a student’s areas of difficulty, and I know resources and exercises that can help strengthen these weak points. For some students this may be conversational practice, for others it is building vocabulary. Many students struggle with grammar. I love making up fun exercises to help with this.

Some of my students are absolute beginners in English or German. My focus with these students might lie more on them gaining the necessary understanding of grammar, rather than helping them expand their advanced vocabulary. An intermediate student with very good grammar might need the exact opposite.
It is very important to me to talk to the student and make a plan together about what to work on. Often students have strong wishes to improve certain skills. It is one of my highest priorities to offer the resources and time to work on these subject areas.
