About Amanda

I am a tutor for German levels 100 and 200. I took German all the way to level 400 and I was completely fluent. I would translate both sides of a conversation (in my life and in TV shows, movies, song lyrics, etc.) without trouble. I did this for years after high school, but fell off of this habit after a bit and have lost a fair amount of the niche vocabulary I used to have, but retained my understanding of the grammar and pronounciation of the German language and more basic vocabulary used in everyday life.

I truely love the German language and am excited to teach others about this practical language. Growing up in the English speaking world, I was always frustrated that none of the "rules" for English applied consistently (i.e. "'i' before 'e' except after 'c'...oh yeah, and all of these other exceptions, too, etc.). Pronunciation is also maddeningly inconsistent in English.

I have developed my own informational worksheets for understanding the rules of the German language and use them in tandem with a basic curriculum and worksheets for vocabulary building, so that my student gains the understanding of how the german language actually works while learning the vocab to get through evryday conversations.

Teaching is one of the best ways to learn something. When I teach someone how to speak German, I get to learn more of it myself. I enjoy breaking down the intimidating aspects of Germanic grammar and pronunciation until they are easy for anyone to understand and apply. This is one of my greatest strengths as a teacher. One great example is how to pronounce the gutteral German "r" which most Americans are unable to do without explanation. Another would be the patterns to recognize for knowing the gender of nouns and the conjugation of a verb. All of these things seem difficult and complex without the help of a knowledgable teacher.

Almost a decade ago, my best friend began taking German in college and reached out to me to see if I could help her get a "leg up" on the class. I spent hours creating my informational worksheets, shared them with her and we went over them together. She told me I taught her more in that one night than in her first 2 months of the class.

I took four years of German in high school (and aced them all with over a 4.0 GPA in the class). I also was one of two students who competed for the coveted "Deutch Meister/Meisterin" title. The other student (with whom I shared the title about 50% of the time) had taken German 100 and then spent one year in Germany as an exchange student. We both completed all 4 years of German in 3.

The first step is always to establish their current level and work from there. It is also vital to know what learning styles are most effective with every student.

The first thing to learn is basic pronunciation, followed by grammar and then to build the student's vocabulary. If someone has a basic understanding, I want to check their ability in each of these areas, in case they have picked up any bad habits.

From there it all depends on the next set of skills and which topics follow the student's current level and what they want to learn.

I will work for cheap for levels 100 and 200. Please make me an offer.

And anyone who is above levels 100 and 200, I'd be happy to do a free meeting/chat with to see if we have anything to teach each other and/or to simply practice our German together.
