I understand that learning math or physics can be quite daunting for many students, and many come into classes believing that they will never be good at math or physics. Unfortunately often times high school math and physics curriculum are designed in such a way that the initial learning curve can be quite steep, and many would simply give up at some point. My job is to make these subjects interesting and accessible to students of various backgrounds. To achieve this, I do the following:
- Backward design: I always try to identify my students' learning objective first before planning any learning activities and assessments. This allows learning experiences and instructions that most closely align towards each of my students' individual goals.
- Assessment: I do formative assessments throughout my lessons to assess my students' understanding of concepts. This allows me to quickly adjust my method if something doesn't work out. It also ensure that any learning activities and instructions always stay on track.
- Instructions: I incorporate a lot of technologies, simulations, demos, etc. into my lessons. I think they are excellent tools to build intuitions and understandings. I also break complicated questions down into manageable "compartments" so students won't feel as overwhelmed.
