About Jonah

My approach to teaching the guitar is deeply embodied. I work with students to harness the simple strength of the skeleton and power of gravity to play the guitar with a natural, easeful efficiency.

For musical expression to be an extension of our inner selves, the guitar must become an extension of our bodies. Playing the guitar is physically demanding, yet we can prevent injury and foster wellbeing by using the body in this way.

I love finding with a student the things that spark their joy and curiosity in music and on the guitar. I love the journey we share together. I learn so much from my students!

I have a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Miami, where I also studied classical guitar, jazz and classical composition, and arranging. My instruction comes out of the amazing teaching that supported my growth, in all its stages. This includes not only music, but Alexander and Linklater techniques from the world of theater, and a wealth of knowledge from the world dance.

About the lesson

I have taught students from ages 7 to 70!

Try a few teachers out before settling on the one that is the best fit for you. Sometimes you know right away when you’ve found the one, but often times we need comparison. Trust your intuition, the teacher that works best for you may not be the one that works best for your friend.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do you want to get from learning the guitar? What are your goals? Musical goals are important too — mastering a lick, perfecting a style, or creating a masterpiece. However music never exists in a vacuum, and a teacher should help you align with (or discover) your broader purpose, not distract you from it.

Please contact me for rates. Lessons can be done in my comfortable apartment setting or in your home. I do not teach via Skype because I believe the deeply personal physicality of playing the guitar can only be communicated in person.

If you decide at any point after we’ve had our first lesson that I’m not the best fit as a teacher, I’ll happily refund you in full for the lesson. I believe unique students call for unique teachers!
