About Cornell

Cornell believes that music lessons should be productive, inspiring and fun! In the past 15 years he has worked with students age 6 to 56 but his love for music has no age limit. Starting at age nine, Cornell formally trained both vocally and at the piano. He was a fast study and at age 15 began teaching choral parts to his peers. He continued his training through college where he acted as Musical Director and expanded his repertoire in many new genres including Jazz, RnB, Latin and many more. Since college, he’s thrived as a singer and keyboardist performing both nationally and internationally. Most recently having toured in Scotland, China, Canada and the Netherlands as well as all corners of the United States including Hawaii, California, New York and Washington D.C. He was seen on the hit show America's Got Talent and off Broadway in the show Feet Don't Fail Me Now! and having recently relocated from Minneapolis to Los Angeles, he is excited to continue his adventure as a musician, performer and teacher.

Cornell trained vocally and as a pianist since the age of nine and has become a highly sought after performance and studio musician in the Twin Cities area. He studied music, theatre and dance at the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he aided many mainstage productions during his time there as Musical Director. Cornell's love for music has created opportunities for him to perform in all corners of the U.S. and tour internationally in Scotland, China, Italy and the Netherlands. He is a new dad so currently his priorities are closer to home and Cornell looks forward to every chance he gets to teach and perform.

About the lesson

While I agree that learning the fundamentals of your instrument is a large focus of a good lesson plan, it can often become stagnant. I believe it is my responsibility to keep each lesson interesting by teaching not only what is on the page but also focusing on skills beyond basic note recognition. For example, aural skills can be developed while learning a pop song or the fundamentals of improvisation can be applied with only a few basic ideas. I strive to cater to each student's individual interests while maintaining a regimen of fundamental exercises.

Cornell has taught students of all ages and his love for music has no age limit.

Cornell gave me some accordion lessons, and I absolutely loved it. He was very flexible in his approach, and taught me in a way that I would understand the theory behind the music, and how to improvie tunes rather than simply memorize songs, which is how I was taught previously. I enjoyed it, and I like that he would give me exercises to practice outside the lessons as well. He is also very friendly and cool! I highly recommend him!
