About Michael

I am a private instructor with years of experience in various aspects of teaching music, as well as performance and production. While I offer performance lessons for stringed instruments and voice, my primary focus is instruction in theory, songwriting, and arranging, things that are not often taught out of a classroom setting.

I started playing guitar at eleven, influenced by acts such as Thrice, Taking Back Sunday, and Thursday, but truly began my study of music at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where my primary field of study was Guitar Performance in Contemporary Music. While at Booker T. Washington, I was a vocalist in the Downbeat Award-Winning Lab Singers, a guitarist and percussionist in the Downbeat Honorable-Mentioned Latin American Ensemble, and a guitarist and vocalist in the Pop Ensemble, performing at venues such as House of Blues, the Meyerson Symphony Center, and the Winspear Opera House.

Since graduating from Booker T. Washington in 2012, I have played guitar and bass and sung in a number of productions with Grapevine-based theater OhLook Performing Arts Center and the Dallas Children’s Theater, including Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson, Footloose, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, played percussion for the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra, worked as a sideman in numerous jazz combos, and played dozens of restaurant and cafes in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Though I have worked professionally in jazz, classical, and theater settings, my passion has always been rock-inspired genres. I have formed, led, and performed with several bands over the years, starting with my first band, Not In Front of the Children, when I was sixteen, but my primary focus has been studio projects showcasing my songwriting and performance, particularly my progressive rock project, Cazador, and my folk-rock project, la Matadora. In addition to my professional work and songwriting, I have been a private instructor for guitar, bass, mandolin, vocal performance, songwriting, and music theory for eight years.

About the lesson

My first goal as an instructor, regardless of instrument, is to help my students establish their goals as a musician. It's important for both myself and the student to understand what they want to gain from music instruction.
