About Mark

My teaching approach:

I use a system of teaching that maps out a plan to meet the students' goals. For some, it is a system of note reading, finger strength and dexterity development, and chord building. For others, it might be developing interesting and engaging solos or fills; I have had great success in all styles. I have had students from pre-school to adults, I have successfully taught them all. My approach is to teach at a pace that student can absorb, while still challenging them to stretch beyond their comfort zone. In addition, I have worked with developmentally challenged students helping them learn.

My influences are:

Competent studio musicians and sidemen. They are the unsung heroes of recorded and performed music. They can play a range of styles, can sit in front of a chart and perform, and have the chops to add to the overall song while still being able to take direction form the artist or producer.to ensure they get the desired outcome.

Guitar Lessons with me take place in the following areas:

Waukesha County

Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:

Tuesday late afternoon and evening, Wednesday morning and early afternoon, and Thursday morning, early afternoon, and evening.

Guitar Techniques:

Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Open tuning, Fingerstyle, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Guidance In Equipment Selection

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

For beginners, it is explaining the guitar, discussing their goals, explaining how I will help them, and then going over their first assignment. For advanced students, I ask them to perform a song they enjoy and feel competent at. I observe their technique and balance that against the goals they have expressed. From that, I map out and explain a learning path for them. Lastly, I will provide some materials to get them started and assign work for the next lesson.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

All lessons begin with the student performing the song or songs that had been assigned during the previous week. If they have been completed successfully, we move on to the next song or concept, working together to make sure it is understood and how it should be practiced. On the other hand, if the student still needs additional work to complete the previous assignment, we work on the sections where the student is having difficulty. In addition, I may develop additional exercises to help complete the assignment for the next week. I am not looking for perfection, but rather understanding.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

Someone who wants to learn and is willing to put in at least three hours of practice every week on the assignment. For younger students, that practice commitment can vary from and hour and a half per week to two hours per week.
