About Andrew
Hi there! My name is Drew and I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, 10 years playing professionally. My work includes free lancing for churches, playing for hire for pop and country artists, and I also play in a country band, Westward Sons, that has opened for artists such as Easton Corbin, Lauren Alaina, and Parmalee, and even done out of state gigs on artist tours.
My teaching style highly revolves around each student's needs, their goals, how they learn best, their level of interest and willingness to practice between lessons, and the rate of their progress. I strongly believe in learning guitar as a musical instrument and not just a physical activity that produces sounds. Too many beginner and even intermediate guitar players rely on it being a fretted instrument and simply learn to play this string and that fret to play music. I do my best to break students out of this approach and learn what they're doing musically so they can then apply that knowledge to other instruments in the future should they want to. I strongly emphasize developing a good ear and not relying on tablature to learn. My approach to teaching technique on guitar is to incorporate exercises to quickly build dexterity and finger independence, and then break from exercises and practice in a musical way.
