About Jonatan

I'm a very detail oriented teacher. I'm nice and patient but more than anything I'm as interested in your growth as you are. I will encourage and teach you the fundamentals to become the guitarist you want to be. You're only as good as the work you put in so if you know where you want to be musically, I'll help you get there.

In my 2 years of teaching, I received all types of students, from older students wanting to learn jazz to young students just barely learning how to play. I've taught all age levels, but also all commitment levels (some more thatn others). In all honesty, I enjoy teaching those who want to learn and improve.

In the last two years of my studies, I worked as a guitar teacher for all ages and playing levels at a local guitar store.

I have a BA in Popular Music from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. I also frequently performed live (both original and cover songs) and self released a solo EP, as well as an EP with a rock band.

About the lesson

First off I like starting off with the students' musical backround. How long have you been playing, what your influences are, what made you want to learn guitar, etc. Then assess at what level the student is at (playing), and what the student wants to be able to play (if anything specific). Once we know which direction we're headed with a clear goal in mind, we're off.

I have worked with all types of students and age types. I've had students who wanted to play as fast as Steve Vai to students avidly in love with jazz (although I don't consider myself a jazz cat by any right or standard), to teaching metal, pop, etc. My angle is, although I'm not necessarily able to play everything, nor am I the best guitarist in the world, thanks to my time studying music, I have the knowledge to get you playing WHATEVER it is you want to learn/achieve (if you put the work in).

Don't settle, and that goes for me too. If a teaching style or teacher isn't working out for you, or you're not getting a good feel, it's not flowing naturally, you're getting lost or not fully understanding, etc. then it's time for a change. The best, fastest, most technical guitarist isn't always the best teacher, and vice versa. Have you ever THOUGHT you understand something, only to get home and realize you have no idea what you're doing? That's what you want to avoid. As a teacher, I don't skim through the fundamentals. I'll always try to make sure you understand everything being taught, to the point that you'll keep understanding and have review notes when you get home.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you're starting out fresh, any good teacher will do a good job at the basics. For more experienced players, rather than asking questions, I'd recommend the student listen to the teacher's playing style before anything. Don't be afraid to switch teachers if one isn't working out for you, but at the same time be honest with yourself, practice yields results (not teachers).

How much time can you (and will you) realistically devote to practice? Goals are centered around the action that take you to them, in this case practice. If you're only able to devote a certain amount of practice time a week, be honest with it and yourself and set real, achievable goals. Momentarily unreachable goals (those that require sometimes years of practice) will only work to dampen your spirit. Be real, be honest with yourself, and you will always succeed.
