About Joshua

There are so many things that make me excited about teaching student about music. I love being able to have an impact on helping them understand music theory and grow musically!

In order to help my students achieve their own personal goals in music, I structure a plan that touches on the very things that they want to learn and whichever genre they want to learn. I also create or research content that is specific for each student. As we have our lessons each week, we work through different areas where the student can improve. Whetever the student may need in order to progress, we will address those areas and set up goals for them to grow.

I love the fact that students are able to do anything that they want with music and I get to help them take that journey. Many of my students have learned a wide variety of genres. I love having the oportunity to stretch their understanding and maybe even learn something they have never heard of before. I love that when my students take the time to practice then I get to see the massive growth that always comes from their hard work. I also love sharing other instrument related things with them, such as repairing knowledge, and what seperates a good instrument from a great one.

My passion has always been to help people understand music. I was never able to afford lessons myself when I was younger and so before I had gone to college for music I had to teach myself which was very limiting. As I took my college courses, I learned the beauty behind music and it has been my desire ever since to share that beauty with every student I teach and do my best to help them in any way possible!

I got started teaching when I started taking music in college. I realized that the things that I was learning was so amazing and all of my questons were being answered about music. The very questions I had had for years were now being answered and I just had to be a part of another young persons journey to grow and have that same excitement for music and understanding it! I started teaching children in the church that I was serving at and then taught more and more people as I went on.

I have been playing guitar for over 11 years and have taught for around 5 years. I have my bachelors degree in music from Liberty University and have played music for churches for around 9 years. I have played at quite a few weddings and funerals and have traveled for classical guitar ensembles in college and played second chair in the chamber guitarists group. I have also performed for some mainstream Christian artists such as Phil Joel. I have had many experiences with large bands and groups that perform music for 2000+ people weekly. I have taught children as young as 5 and elderly as old as 70 and know how to address many different problems that may come.

About the lesson

When working with a new student I usually go through a series of questions to better help know where we can start.

1) How long have you been playing your instrument?

2) What genres of music do you like to listen to/play?

3) Do you know any music theory?

4) Do you know how to read sheet music?

5) What are you looking to learn/ what are your goals?

6) How can I best help you/ what is your learning style?

After these questions, it will help me to form a good direction for the lessons to start and for my student to progress quickly. If a student doesn't know how to read sheet music or music theory, I usually point them to my blog section on my website where they are able to read and ask questions about those topics. The blogs discuss the basics of music theory and reading standard notation. This will help to get the lessons going on a more upbeat and fun note!

At the end of the lesson, I typically assign "homework" that will push them throughout the week such as a certain number of pages in a method book or maybe some scales or other things that I would like them to be practiceing and have ready for the next lesson time.

I have worked with many different students. I have worked with students as young as 5 and as old as 70 from beginner to advanced. I have taught metal, country, blues, indie, classical, christain, and other genres too.

Whoever you find, make sure that they care about you enough that they will try everything that they can to make sure you are the best you can possibly be and who will encourage you. Find someone who will be excited with you. Make sure that your teacher will spend time outside of your lesson time to make sure you have everything that you will need for the following week.

I recently assigned one of my students his first piece and he was so excited. He was having a hard time but then after a little coaching he started to understand the concepts of key signatures. He then learned a quarter of the piece in our 1 hour lesson time.

Another event that I loved was when my student decided she wanted to learn a song by Neon Trees. She practiced so hard on a barr chord (which is advanced for someone who is just beginning to learn guitar) and the notes came out perfectly! She was so excited and I felt so proud of her!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should really ask themselves a few questions:

1) How much do I actually want to learn? I could learn chords, scales, modes, how to read sheet music, but what would fit you better?

2) Am I willing to learn things that at times I don't necessarily want to? Sometimes there is boring stuff but sometimes those boring things help you get to a point that will help you grow.

3) Do I have all that I need for materials?

4) Am I able to devote the time it takes to practicing?

Details

There are a few different pricings that I have currently but will be expanding soon.

1) Private 1 hour lessons are $45. They take place once a week.

2) Private 1/2 hour lessons are $30. They take place once a week.

3) Group Guitar Lessons (single student) are $125 for the month (for the first student) but students are able to attend for up to 80 hours each month. This is only in person and at the location specified on my website.

4) Group Guitar Lessons (2-4 students) $200 for the month. You only pay for the first two people and then the second two are free. This is also only in person and at the location specified on my website.

5) Virtual Group Guitar Lessons (coming soon and when it does the price for the other group lessons will be reduced)
