The bottom line is, I use your favorite songs as the best vehicles for teaching you the technical aspects of playing. I’ve been teaching this way for almost half a century.
As an unexpected side effect of teaching this way is what led to a second career where I was a transcriber and editor writing out the tablature books for the recording artists. I did this for all of the main music publishers and guitar magazines.
I would encourage you to take a vantage of this very unique skill because there’s no one else in South Florida who can teach at this level

Finding your point A and point B which HAVE to be factored in to get you the most direct results. Only the most experienced instructors have the versatility to adapt to each individual students and it's that adaptability which will save your from wasting a lot of time on things you need while focusing on what is relevant.
When a teacher tries to convince you that their magic method will work for anyone, they are being lazy and you aren't really receiving individual lessons. Those are just lower quality group lesson for the same price as quality individual lessons.
Question: can you name one excellent or even a good guitarist who actually achieved their skill as the result of following a step-by-step method?

Perfect! Colgan takes the time to understand the students musical goals, influences and skill level. He then takes that information and develops a personalized lesson plan specifically for the student.
Excellent! Dude knows his stuff. Looking forward to working with him in the future.
Excellent! Qualified, knowledgeable, easy to understand. Continuing review of different instructors, moving closer to deciding
Perfect! personality, knows what he is talking about, knows what the student needs before the student does. This from someone who has over sixty years in the music business.Ive never met anyone as versatile as Colgan. He can explaine anything and everything so you completely get it, Colgan is simply the best, hands down!!!
Perfect! Super friendly. Awesome teacher!
Excellent! Colgan, explained what my possibilities are in a simple fashion and I felt very comfortable, hence the reason why I choose Bryan.
Perfect! Colgan is knowledgeable, patient, enthusiastic, and able to customize his teaching to the students abilities, learning style, and interests. I have taken lessons before with two good teachers but was looking for someone with the experience to help me develop a practice routine to achieve my goals. I am an intermediate guitar player who is ready to invest more time in improving my musical skills, but need more direction than the internet lessons available can offer.
Colgan works with you based on your musical preferences. He has provided me with unique insights rather than simply telling me what need to learn. I like the fact that his approach is to teach you how to effectively practice and learn rather than providing you with a program that he has developed to suit all of his students. Based on my experience with Colgan over the past 5 months, i recommend that prospective students give him a try. I think you will find his experience, approach, and positive personality make him an excellent teacher that can help you achieve your goals.View more reviews

Amazing results!!! I can't believe his incredible knowledge and this unique approach. I was also really impressed when I saw two bookshelves, each 6 ft tall, full of books he edited and transcribed for almost every recording artist I have ever heard of, for guitar and bass.
Great teacher, easy to learn from his direction, and now a great friend.
He is personable, professional, and now a lifelong friend. My husband always wanted to learn how to play guitar. His resume and background are amazing. The only thing I didn't know at the time is that we would make a family friend! :)
I highly recommend Colgan to anyone! He offers Skype lessons and was flexible with my schedule.
Colgan is one of the most knowledgeable, experienced instructors I've ever had. He has a way of understanding your musical goals, needs/wants, and abilities and putting the instruction into the most constructive lessons for each personal learning style. Colgan teaches from the soul and it shows when you learn from him. I went in looking for a guitar teacher, what I got was a guitar mentor. Colgan's resume is both extensive and impressive and he is well versed in all styles of music. I've been playing for 30 years and will always feel like
a better player after lessons from Colgan.I started taking lessons from Colgan a couple of years ago but had to stop because of work commitments. After a few years of being “off”, I decided to call Colgan and start taking lessons again. Immediately he remembered all about me, asked about my daughter, and was genuinely excited to be able to give me lessons again. Not because I would simply be another student added to his roster, but I truly felt that he has tremendous passion in sharing his unique gift of music. If you are looking for someone that is patient, insists on going slow so you can learn it correctly, and truly wants to make you happy with the music you want to learn, Colgan is for you. I am by no means an excellent guitar player, but Colgan definitely works with me and makes me feel, and see, the progress I am making. I recommend Colgan for all levels of experience. He loves music and will share that passion with you.

When I met Colgan a few years ago I was not new to lessons. I was already playing the piano (and taking lessons}. I had taken guitar lessons, bass lessons, and some vocal lessons. Although I was at an intermediate level (at least I thought so) with guitar, I was pretty well versed at “taking lessons”. What I absolutely love about Colgan (don’t let that resume fool you, he’s just about the most down to earth, beautiful human being that I’ve ever met) was that he understands that people are different, that they learn a little differently, they may perceive life a little differently too. Colgan’s approach is not just to teach sight reading and technique, but he wants to figure out who you are, what you like, what motivates you, how YOU learn most effectively. He has not only taught me practice studio stuff, He’s taught me “band situation” stuff. You see, Colgan is one of those guys who practices what he teaches. Not only does he have a lot of teaching experience, but he has a lot of “LIVE FIRE” experience. Oh, and he doesn’t share his experience with you like those “nose in the air, I’ve been playing for years, I know more than you” guys that you sometimes run into. Colgan Bryan truly cares about his students and his teaching and teaching each person to be the best musician (both personality and technique wise) they can be. I am very happy and proud to call Colgan my teacher and my friend.
2 days agoWanna learn about music and how you can improve your approach and playing then you'll want to call Colgan. His technique is more about how you learn than just playing a single song.
I'm one of those former young people (58 years now) who laments a misspent adolescence pursuing a dream in professional basketball. I dribbled and dribbled, pivoted and jumped, elbowed and rebounded, and yet I rocketed exactly sideways in my progress. I spent my life’s best 10,000 hours doing this and it goes without saying that it's not something that you can carry in your toolbox forever, much less beyond age 16.
Instead, I now specialize in Geriatrics (hours by appointment) and I did, by many measures, OK.
I've always felt, though, that I missed my window by not learning to play the guitar when I was a kid so I could carry that in my toolbox. However, I did play bass guitar in a crappy band and I was fired from that band because I, quite frankly, sucked. (As an interesting footnote, that band suddenly was a lot less crappy with me not in it! I Know, right?!?!)
So the years passed and I bought the occasional guitar and began a second career as a couch noodler.
I could play a few chords but never a song.
More years passed and my wife challenged me to get better. I looked for guitar teachers on line and on Craig’s List and I, very happily, as it turns out, found Colgan.
Colgan’s a great teacher. He’s patient and funny and very encouraging especially when I would get down on myself for a lifetime of lacking progress and direction.
And just as another friend told me, you can only start from where you are which is why it’s not too late to call Colgan for lessons.
While Colgan is a professional musician, he doesn’t spend the hour showing you what he can do.
Instead, he shows you what you can do.
I couldn’t ask for more.
Colgan and I have been friends for two years now and I can honestly say that my time with him is among my favorite hours of the week.
He’s a delight.
I recommend Colgan to anyone looking to add music to their lives.

I'm not a musician, but I've always liked music, always wanted to play guitar. For a birthday gift one year, my wife paid for me to take lessons. Colgan was the go-to guy because he'd taught my daughter. Lessons were fun and Colgan always challenged me with one new thing to learn and practice for the following week.
I quit taking lessons when I moved to North Florida about 10 years ago, and I usually I have to wipe off some dust when I take my guitar out of the case nowadays, often, when I want to figure out a song I've just heard--and that's when I think of Colgan. Along with teaching solid technique and a little theory, he emphasized how to take apart a song and recreate what I heard with what I'd learned. I still do this, write it down and then feel like the song is part mine. To me, the ability to figure out music is a priceless gift that comes standard, with lessons, from Colgan Bryan
