About Valerie

I teach people how to read, understand and connect with their horses to create a safe partnership built on trust. To really develop a relationship with your horse, the foundation needs to be respect--the horse must be respected if respect from the horse is expected by the rider. Make it easy to do the right thing. Horses work off of pressure and release. Without this understanding, there is a dictatorship rather than a partnership and/or an accident waiting to happen.

For the past 45 years of my life, I had the priviledge of having horse, and love sharing my knowledge and exposing others to that joy. Part of what I do is for the horse--it is essential for the human to understand the horse in order to develop a harmonious and respectful relationship. We owe it to the horse to be able to communicate in a respectful and clear way. Horses are generally very willing and eager to please if they understand what it is we are asking of them, which requires us to know how they think.

I have owned, ridden and shown horses for over 45 years. I managed a show barn in Ojai, California many years ago, worked as a horse handler and groom for several trainers, hauled horses for a living and gave many a lesson. I have learned many valuable lessons from many horses and trainers alike, but one cannot argue that there is no better teacher than the horse....

About the lesson

I generally teach groundwork first, as it it essential for the student to be able to handle the horse safely and develop communication and a partnership on the ground before attemping to ride. I teach how to get the horse to hook on and interact with the rider in that fashion. From there, the things learned on the ground translate into the saddle beautifully.
