About Susan

Started riding at 3 years old, being ponied by my grandfather who shared my passion for horses. After obtaining my BS in Equestrian studies, trained horses part time while working as an RN. Have done lessons intermittently throughout my life modeling my lessons after what I was taught in school. As a lifetime learner, I read, watch videos and take online classes to update my teaching skills continuously. I have learned that basic education of horses and riders are the same regardless of the discipline that one adopts in the end. That is why my own horse can compete in hunters, dressage, trail, and working horsemanship. Lessons vary from lounge work, riding in an arena, working with obstacles, and riding in open fields. Now in my 60s, I no longer jump five foot fences, ride Grand Prix dressage horses, or work Reining horses. Its your turn now. What can I teach you?

I enjoy watching students forming a partnership with their horses as they get better at speaking their language. I enjoy experiencing the personalities of horses and their owner and the bond the form as they start progressing. I enjoy watching the newly formed team achieve real success and knowing I may have had a small part to play in the transformation.

I started teaching by request. People liked what my horses were doing and wanted help riding their horses the same way.

Worked with multiple breeds: Thoroughbreds, Quarter horses, Morgans, Arabians, Freshians, Paints, Appalousas, Palominos and minis.

About the lesson

Take a history on what they have been doing, information on their horse, who they have trained with in the past.

Access their current skills and that of their horse to see if there are any gaps in their training.

Set goals with the student- based on how often they will be taking lessons and what they want to accomplish.

Determine their preferred reward system and how motivated they are to achieve their goals.

I have worked with hunters, dressage horses at all levels up to Pre Saint George, reining horses, and obstacle trail horses. Most importantly, have worked with many "backyard" horses and their riders who have just wanted to improve their riding and the training of their horses. Several horses in 4 H and Pony Club.

Every horse and every person is different. Look for a teacher who has worked with a number of different horses. Next seek a personality in your intructor that you can learn from. Not all personality types mesh. You need to understand what that teacher is telling you so that you can impart information to your horse and you can both progress.

Horse Expo of PA is one of my favorite events because of the diversity of the exhibits. It is a learning experience extraordinaire. Their are opportunities to ride, do exhibitions, and to learn from other horsemen and women.

For hunter minded riders, the Pennsylvania National Horse Show offers national competition at all levels.

For dressage riders, the State College area offers several schooling shows that allows riders the opportunity to get another opinion, the judges opinion, on their capabilities in training their horse through the levels clear up to Grand Prix.

Depends on frequency of lessons and whether they are a boarder. Once a week as a boarder: $75

$1 per mile each way.

Once per month lessons: $120

All pricing is done by individual contract.
