About Jordan

I have years of experience coaching people, both in software and in other areas. (like kickboxing) My vast experience teaching others in many different disciplines has given me a finely tuned eye for habits & progression.

I am a self-taught programmer, having started my journey when I was 22-23; which means I STILL REMEMBER what it's like to be in your chair.

I'm all about results. Tell me where you're trying to go, and I'll help you get there!

I find learning extremely interesting. So much so that I completed a world-famous course that teaches people how to do just that.

As a programmer, I love designing things that work. I love to take a real-world, human problem, and translate it into problems a machine can solve. I love building things.

As a coach, I love to see you get better. It's one of the most rewarding things that you could do. It's even more rewarding when my students surpass me, and doors open for them that were never there before.

The process of making anything worth something is always hard, but I find ways to love that process too. Can't wait to start the journey with you.

I am a big brother of a lot of siblings, so for me, teaching started there.

I've also been a manager, and trained people at jobs.

I've also been a kickboxing coach.

I've also been a technical coach. (At the Flatiron School, an intense coding bootcamp.)

I've also been a senior dev, helping others by pair-programming & reviewing code.

Most recently, I have been a mentor to people looking to break into tech, and a volunteer at a children's center. (teaching kids ages 8-12 a simplified, visual form of coding)

I took Computer Science in college, where I first learned to code (in C++)

Then, I began self-studying on the internet, where I learned a great deal, and all the basics.

When I felt it was time, I took a three-month bootcamp, where I learned slightly more advanced things. (frameworks)

I didn't get a job right away, so I continued to try ventures on my own, which is the BEST way to learn. Doing.

I got a job. Then another. Then another. This helped me dedicate myself to practicing my craft full time.

And I am now right back where I started. Doing things, and learning while I do them. (Just like you)

About the lesson

The first & most important thing to do is to find out what your goals are. This will determine what we cover & how.

Next, a diagnostic. To help you get where you're going, I need to see where you are at. I typically ask a few questions to see what do & don't know.

After that, an assignment. I break things into chunks, maybe help by introducing you to the topic, then tell you what you should aim to master by the next time we talk.

Finally, a guided review. This will help test what you have covered, and SOLIDIFY the concepts in your brain. It will also inform my next assignment for you!

Rinse & Repeat!

All kinds. Adults, kids, black, white, girls, boys; doesn't matter.

Know what you are trying to accomplish.

Sample people. Don't be pressured into committing to someone you don't vibe with.

Try to find someone who came from a similar place as you, and went to a place similar to where you're trying to go. (I'm speaking of exp & goals, not literal places)

Details

I only charge for the time that I spend. My typical rate is $50/hr, but it's possible that we may only need one hour together per week.

I won't have you spend hours with me, I am simply here to help you learn how to teach yourself, as you will ALWAYS have to learn in this field.

I structure lessons in a way that you can spend the majority of time at your own pace, and check in with me regularly for assessment & re-direction. :)
