About Kenny

I was born and raised in Kenya where I attended British schools. There was an insistence on discipline and academic rigor. More than anything else, though, we learned how to learn.

I was one of those annoying high school students who was frequently called upon to run a class if a teacher had to step out for a few minutes. Many many years later, when my daughter attended a private day school in Bridgehampton, NY, I could not pay the fees so helped out in the classroom quite often. Her teacher told me that I was a born teacher and should get my Masters Degree in Education from Bank Street College in Manhattan - one of the most progressive schools in the US. So I did.

Since then, I have been a "free lance" guest teacher of my own workshops at every level, from kindergarten to doctorate students. I am not an expert in any one topic, but I know how to get students of any age to learn. I have coached many students - even adults - in reading and writing. I have conducted workshops, as in GEOGRAPHY IS THE BEGINNING OF HISTORY or YOU TOO CAN MAKE A MATHAZINE. I have developed curriculum on a variety of topics and conducted teacher training programs in Kenya, the US and even India. I am now a bright and energetic 79 years old and have been teaching one way or the other for over 40 years.

I now live in Santa Fe, NM, where I am a substitute teacher at all levels. Each day, I am thrown into a different classroom and must teach English, Math, Science, Social Studied and frequently, basic skills in special education classes.

I have a very broad educational background with a B. Sc. in zoology and botany and a postgraduate degree in filmmaking. I am a documentary filmmaker and a widely published author and journalist. I am a professional researcher, copy editor, and proofreader.

I am currently building a business to coach high school students with their college application essays.

My high level of education, broad global perspective, success as a published author, and years of teaching experience make me uniquely qualified to teach reading and writing at every level. I am also very widely read and familiar with both classical and contemporary literature. I can help students to find the spine of a story, figure out character descriptions, and excercise critical thinking skills in terms of plot analysis, story arc, and character development.

I am always intruiged by younger people and excited by those "a ha!" moments that make a student's eyes light up. I get along with students of all ages - even those in Middle School - and bring my unique upbringing and life experiences to every classroom.

About the lesson

Literacy lessons offered by Kenny are tailored to each student's needs and level. Lessons can also be held online. Lessons are also available in Santa Fe. The first lesson is free to define learning goals and methodology.
