About Garven
Serving the Lake Highlands area since 1980, the Dallas Academy of Martial Arts has trained Kids, Teens, and Adults in Taekwondo and real world self-defense. Our curriculum is fast-paced, energetic, and extensive. We live and train by our mantra Black Belt Excellence which we define as- I Can, I Will, Do My Best. We don't ask for perfection, we ask for your best.
I like martial arts for my own fitness. I love martial arts for what it can do to, and for, students who give genuine effort. It can be transformative and life-changing. When I see a student reach their goal, develop self-confidence, and realize their physical potential, I am filled with pride.
My wife and I signed up our young son when he was in kindergarten (he just graduated college). He regularly asked me to join him but I was traveling so much back then. My schedule finally stabilized and I decided to give it a try. I have loved it ever since.
I am the Owner/Operator/5th Dan Master Instructor with 16 years of continuous training here. The founder and former owner, Mr. Bobby Autry, was ready to retire just as I had left my previous business. I was the highest ranked student/Instructor here and was looking for a new career. I love martial arts and decided to buy the dojo where I have trained for so long.

About the lesson

A new student joins the class and immediately gets started in the large group activity. Then, more individual work begins with a more experienced student or instructor for part of the class time. Therafter, we all come back together for more general drills and answer questions along the way.
We train students as young as 5.5 years old, and as mature as their early 70's! Our students come from all walks of life and abilities. The important thing is to get started!
I would advise any student to visit and watch a class in action, check the facility, and meet the instructors before your first day in class. Trust your instincts and then get in there and give it your best!
We just recently hosted a self defense seminar for the 4th grade girls and their moms from Moss Haven Elementary School. 33 moms, daughters, and some sisters attended! Each of them commented on how informative, common sense, and crucial it was have learned what we taught them that day. We are very proud to have empowered girls and women that way.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Each student should consider what their motiviation is to learn martial arts. Is it for self-confidence, self-control, better balance, or fitness? Is your motivation to learn self defense, or simply to take up a new sport after having tried others. When you understand WHY you joined, you can better set your goals and expectations.

All new students begin with our Introductory Special. With our special the student receives a new uniform, belt, class t-shirt, and 6 weeks of lessons for $129.
