Ask them a few fundamental questions about the topic and do some basic arithmetic questions. After that, ask about the questions they have and allot some time for afterwards
Before the end of the day I will recommend some steps to improve on your mathematical skills then tackle the couple of questions that you have
I've worked with students of all kinds, but mainly students who are generally weaker in Math (since I work in a mathnasium) and have brought them up to speed in terms of their grade level
