About Alex

I have been teaching and tutoring for almost a decade. When I was in college, I volunteered as a tutor at a local elementary school and also worked for a tutoring company, helping students prepare for the SAT and ACT. Upon graduation, I worked as a classroom teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools for several years before deciding to tutor full-time.

All of our tutors are college-educated professionals with experience studying and teaching the subjects they tutor. They all pass a knowledge test demonstrating their understanding of the subjects and a working interview in which they prove they can tutor. They must also pass a comprehensive background check and have outstanding references. They then undergo training in research-based best practices in tutoring.

When we get the opportunity to work with a new family, we listen and learn about the child and their specific academic needs. Based on that, we recommend a tutor who we think is a best fit. If the family approves the tutor, we schedule a first session. At the conclusion of the first session, the tutor collects several work samples that can be used to formulate the individualized learning plan.

We have worked with a wide range of customers from kindergartners learning phonics to first-semester high school seniors prepping for the SAT to graduate students taking advanced math classes. We are able to meet a wide range of needs because our tutors are specialists in their respective fields. For example, if we are working with a third grader on reading comprehension, one of our elementary school teachers would be the tutor. While we have calculus tutors who read and comprehend third grade text, they does not possess the same expertise in providing elementary reading instruction as a tutor who is an elementary school teacher.

Make sure that the tutoring is tailored to meet your child's particular learning style and needs. Many tutoring companies apply a "cookie cutter" model-- the idea that the same strategies will work for each student. That belief is false and using it does not maximize student potential.
