About Jannett

I am a native English and Spanish speaker who started learning Japanese about 4 years ago. Ever since, I have traveled throughout Japan, earned Japanese scholarships, participated in Japanese speech contests, and made genuine Japanese friends. I want to encourage students who are interested in learning Japanese that the culture goes beyond anime and the language is a great entry way for other languages that are structured in a similar style.

I started teaching when my friends asked me to tutor them algebra, statistics and calculus 1 in high school, and eventually I wanted to focus on tutoring languages as a creative break from all the math. I tried learning various languages by watching international movies, day in my life vlogs on YouTube, reading bilingual childrens books and talking with fluent friends online. With the skills that I learned, it was easier for me to communicate in my chosen languages. Then I went to college and took Japanese classes. After a year, I started mentoring beginners outside of my campus. I've learned a lot from everyone and I wish to continue learning and helping more students with their langauge goals!

I am currently a senior pursuing a B.S. in computer science and I've successfully completed my minor in Japanese. I am a native Spanish speaker who grew up learning the language entirely from a home environment. In regards to my training, I have 4 years of tutoring various subjects to my colleagues, friends, and family, so they have helped me as well. Then, I had the opportunity to shadow my personal Japanese tutor for a year while at university. I still continue to develop my skills by learning from my students. I tutor my students by dividing the language into culture, grammar, writing, reading, speaking, and listening lessons.

About the lesson

I start off by getting know the student's Japanese proficiency. We will discuss their prefered learning style as well as meeting dates and time details. I will ask the student their goals and what they've done to improve or what they want to do to improve. My tutoring lessons will generally be the student and I focusing on any content or idea the student does not understand and then me explaining to them or helping them with studying and mastering that concept.

I mainly work with high schoolers to young adults. It is easier for me to introduce new topics and explain ideas or situations regarding Japanese culture that connects to the developing generation.

Details

I start at $25/60min to tutor one individual student at a time through zoom. I give a free first 30 minute lesson, so that I can get to know the student's goals, their background in the language and anything else they may want to share with me. If the student needs to cancel or reschedule, then they may do so at least 24 hours in advanced. If you have any questions, please contact me.
