About James

My tutoring seeks to be highly responsive to a student's needs and learning styles. I carefully listen to the student and watch how they solve problems. Because of this, I can judge what level of preparation is needed and the level of problem the students should start at. Then, with a firm foundation, I have the student work towards being as independent and confident as possible with math.

I have over 600 hours one-on-one tutoring experience since 2017. Also, I recently came home from teaching in Africa for 7 months with the Peace Corps, so I have experience teaching across language and cultural barriers to students of all levels. After graduating from Metea Valley High School in 2015, I atteneded University of Toronto. In 2019 I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics, statistics, and math.

I started tutoring in college and completed over 600 hours of one-on-one support with students. I have a year of student teaching as well.

I am earning a Master of Education degree from Johns Hopkins University. I have a bachelors degree in statistics and economics, with a minor in math, from the University of Toronto. I will be a full time high school math teacher starting this September.

About the lesson

My ultimate goal for tutoring is to make the student as independent and confident as possible. This ensures the student's long term success in math.

To accomplish this, I make sure the student does the majority of the thinking and talking during our sessions. I aim to have students themselves discover the intuition and processes that work best for them.

I have worked with students who believe math is not for them, those who are stuggling but motivated, and those that love math, with students ranging from 5th grade to 12th grade. I have seen tremendous growth in all of them!
