I love helping students gain mastery over new concepts. Students feel excitement, pride, empowerment, and relief when they understand the concepts that their teachers want them to learn. Helping students achieve these moments brings me joy!
I come from a long line of teachers and am innately a teacher myself. My first experiences teaching were as an assisant ballet teacher in middle school and a peer-to-peer math tutor in high school and college. I then taught horseback riding lessons for eight years. When I being working with a new student, my priorities are driven by the student. Many students are more vocal about asking questions when they feel comfortable with their tutor. As a result, my first priority is often to build repoire with the student. I then work on gaining an understanding of the student's current ability level and their goals.
I have worked with female and male students age 5 into late adulthood. I have worked with students with and without learning disabilities.
At this point in time, the ability to conduct professional, accessible tutoring sessions online is paramount. Beyond that, subject material expertise is obviously essential. Finally, I think personality fit is very important. I pride myself on my ability to make connections with my students, to explain concepts thoroughly, and to have patience. I absolutely never let my students feel stupid in my classes. Students seeking tutors by definition need extra assistance, so at tutor's patience and empathy are very important.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should be prepared to share the course material with the tutor ahead of time.

Shayla was an awesome tutor! During our sessions she goes at my own pace and checks in with me to make sure I understand the concept before moving on. Whenever I need more information or a deeper explanation to understand “why” something works, she’s more than willing to take a deep dive. She is patient and is great at breaking things down into digestible pieces rather than all at once. Shayla is great at asking me first to explain a concept that comes up and then personalizing her response to fill in the gaps that I’m missing. I’ve had nothing but great experiences and would 100% recommend her!
