I get to know a new student's strengths and weaknesses by assessing their knowledge on various math topics. Then, I work from there to build upon their strengths and improve their weaknesses.
I have worked with students ranging from preschool to high school. I have worked with students who excel in math and use tutoring to get ahead, and also students who need tutoring to brush up on certain topics to catch up in class.
