About Jonathan

I don't teach rote methods. I find out how you think, and then we explore the concept. You will discover what you can do. So it's about you!

I like people. And it feels good to help.

There's a strange feeling of completion when I've helped a student to move from haziness to clarity. And there is a certain beauty in order, too!

A friend knew someone at a parochial school. The head of the Math department was suddenly grievously injured, and wasn't expected to recover. The principal offered me an emergency position as a "permanent substitute." I accepted the challenge.

Months later, the teacher returned, and chose to be my mentor, and thus to permit me to continue. A few months after finishing that school year, I got it in my head to apply to teach at a local vocational school. It was another campus of a school at which I had earned my first degree. They took a chance on me, and I didn't disappoint.

Now years later, having taught at a handful of local colleges and universities, I offer my experience and expertise to you, my new student!

Three degrees in Engineering, including ...

... a Master's degree from GA Tech ...

... and 20 years' experience teaching (most at the college level) ...

... and a love for Mathematics!

About the lesson

We chat a little. Then we talk goals. I assure the student that I can help him to meet those goals. I tell some history to back up my claim.

Then we sit and try to solve some problems - preferrably those that have presented a challenge - and I help the student to see how his innate ability and knowledge to date are enough to make significant progress.

All sorts, really. Capable, talented, challenged.

Because I don't teach rote methods, I can take on any student who wishes to learn. My goal is to teach my students to think. And since thinking is natural, it's just a matter of leadership. I clarify concepts, and I affirm students.

Look for someone patient, insightful and flexible. It's the three things a textbook can't be.

My recent GRE score:

Verbal, 167,

Quantitative, 169.

For an on-line session, $50 per hour*. Call for details.

For a face-to-face session, $60 per hour.*

*An hour and a half is recommended for the first session.

For an on-line two-hour session [recommended], $120; an hour-and-a-half session, $100; a single hour, $75.

For face-to-face, add $15 per session.
