About Thomas

I'm an eager and compassionate person! Much like serving in the military, I believe in teaching to make a difference!

I have always loved teaching mostly for the 'aha' moment. It's more than getting the answer to a specific problem; it's when the student understands the concept that makes me truly happy.

Ever since I was young, I've wanted to become a math teacher. While I have never formally taught in an academic setting, I tutored peers and youngerr students when I was in high school and college.

While in the Navy, I was responsible for teaching various subjects, such as explosive safety, general shipboard safety, and anti-terrorism to name a few. While they do not directly relate to math, teaching in the Navy fueled my passion to teach even more.

I graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering. I did the ROTC program where I commissioned in the Navy directly after graduating college where I served for almost 6 years as a Surface Warfare Officer. I am currently in the Navy Reserves. Additionally, I am also a Dad, so teaching is part of my daily life!

Introductions are the first and most important part! Let me know what name you would like to go by so I can address you in an appropriate way. I want to acknowledge you are a real person, and let you know that I'm a real person who wants to help! You can call me whatever you want; Tom, Thomas, Mr. Tom, Mr. S... etc. whatever works for you! If you want to know how to pronounce my last name, it sounds like 'inertia', just with an 's' in front!

After introductions, I want to learn about what problem you are having. By this, I mean more than just the actual problem statement. What part of the problem are you having difficulty with? Is it how to start off? Or figuring out what information you can obtain from the problem statement? I firmly believe that you know more than you think! I want to help build your confidence in solving problems so you can solve more and more problems in the future!

I worked with 'students' from all different types of backgrounds. Being in the Navy, I've learned to communicate in different ways. No two people learn exactly the same way. That's why I believe in figuring out 'how' someone learns. If we can figure out how to communicate in a similar way, then we can solve any problem together.

I've also been taught by people with all different types of backgrounds! That is the bueaty of having served in the U.S. Navy! I've learned from brand new Seamen and well seasoned Chiefs, from fellow Junior Officers, and from experienced Commanders.

Be prepared to think outside the box! Math is more than just solving for one simple answer. Math builds a foundation to solve larger problems. Math can be related to everything! Whether you love puzzles, videogames, music, sports, or hot tea, math plays a very important part!

My wife and I are having our second child this summer, so we are very thankful and excited!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out

Details

Since I'm just starting off as a tutor, I am going to begin at $25/hr. This breaks down to a little less than 42 cents/min.

if we do less than one hour, I will charge the 42 cents/min.

For example, if we work together for 18 min, the price would be $7.56.
