About Zili

I am currently an Irvington High School senior who is very passionate about math. I have taken numerous honors math courses, scored very well on standardized testing, and have exceptional experiences in tutoring. I am very knowledgeable about all topics ranging from elementary school math to high school AP Calculus and can provide high-quality tutoring for those subjects. I am also familiar with Common Core math standards, having restudied those subjects under the new standards.

* I am also fluent in Mandarin, for those who may have a language barrier in English.

A list of math courses I have taken over the years:

- Algebra 1 Honors

- Geometry Honors

- Algebra 2/ Trig Honors

- Precalculus Honors

- AP Calculus AB

A list of test scores:

- 800 on SAT 1 Math Section (Old Version)

- 800 on SAT Math 2

- 36 on ACT section

- 5 on AP Calculus BC Exam

In the past, I have tutored a student in Precalculus for a full year, and another one in Geometry for a full year. Currently, I have 8 students who have weekly or biweekly sessions with me. I am tutoring 4 students in Common Core middle school math, 1 in high school Geometry, 1 in Precalculus, and 2 in AP Calculus.

My two favorite things about tutoring in math are the subject and the students. I have always taken joy in studying math in my childhood, and working with numbers is when I am most comfortable. One of my happiest moments is when I can spread my passion for math to my students.

I also develop very close relationships with my students, and I love being able to individually work with students based on their needs. I have worked with some of my students for almost three years, and we have developed true friendships over the years.

My first student was a friend who was struggling with their pre-calculus class. After studying with them for roughly 6 months, they were able to raise their grade in the class from a B to an A. After that, I outreached other students in my school until I eventually started looking for students online (like through this website).

Typically, I would talk to the student and their parents before the first session to find out about basic information such as the math class they take currently and have taken in the past, as well as how they are doing in those classes.

During the first session, I try to personally assess my students on their math capabilities and to get to know them better in general. After that, I will talk with the student and parent again to address any weaknesses, and come up with a goal and plan for future lessons.

I have worked with students who are simply struggling in a class and wish to understand the subject better or get raise their grade.

I have worked with students who only meet up with me before important tests to review concepts and do practice problems.

I have worked with students who are doing exceptionally well in their math class and wish to learn ahead.

I have worked with students who wish to learn math not typically taught in high school, such as modular arithmetic; number systems outside of base 10; and competition math such as AMC (8 or 10), Mathleague, Mathcounts, etc.

Before I started tutoring, I have studied under many math tutors my self. Some of the best advice I can offer include:

- Find someone you can easily communicate with

- Find someone you are COMFORTABLE with

- Make sure their qualifications meet your needs

- NEVER tell a tutor you understand something you don't. It will show up later and is a waste of both parties' time.

- ALWAYS do work assigned by tutors. It is specifically tailored to your specific needs.

- Don't show up to class sick.

- Don't show up to class extremely sleep deprived.

- Take the class seriously. A tutor can only do so much if the student isn't motivated.

Last year, I helped a student who was enrolled in non honors precalc study for the BC calculus test. After a year of hard work and study, he ended up scoring a 5 on the AP test.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some questions to ask your self:

How am I doing in my math class right now?

How motivated am I to study outside of sessions?

What do I want to learn?

Should I have 1-hour or 2-hour sessions?

Why do I want to improve at math?

Are there any tests I need to be preparing for? (Tests in class, Placement tests, SAT, ACT, etc.)
