About Henry

Math has always come naturally to me. Sometimes I even think numbers make more sense to me than words. Unfortunately this was not the case for my little sister. She was diagnosed with NF1 which includes a learning disability. We couldn't afford a tutor, so I took it upon myself to teach her. I honestly had a lot of fun deconstructing what her teachers taught her and finding new ways to explain it that would click in her head. Now she's doing great on her own in high school and I've moved on to college to pursue a career in data analytics, and I miss it. I miss seeing her eyes light up when the connection is finally made, and I miss the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with it.

I enjoy every moment of what I do. I find it fun taking apart what was taught in school and finding a new way to explain it that makes more sense. I love seeing the kid's eyes light up when it finally clicks inside their head, and I love the feeling of pride and accomplishment that come from knowing I made a difference in the kid's life.

My sister was diagnosed with a learning disability at a young age. We couldn't afford a tutor so I took it upon myself to get her through school. I started tutoring her when I was in sixth grade and only ended last year when I moved away for college.

In high school I took algebra 1 and 2, geometry, statistics, pre-calc, trigonometry, and AP physics 1 and 2 which were both calculus based. So far in college I've taken calc based physics, advanced biocalculus, and I'm currently taking psychological statistics. I'm studying data analytics so I'm sure this list will continue to grow with time.

I want the child to be successful beyond just getting good grades. If he/she doesn't understand a concept I'll take the time to not only explain it, but also to find alternative ways of explaining it that might make more sense than what is taught in school.

I've worked with my little sister who has NF1 including a learning disability as well as some of her friends. More recently I've helped out some of my college friends with their homework.

Finding the right tutor is like finding the right therapist. It takes a lot of effort from both parties for it to work, and you won't always connect with them right away. Just keep at it and remember that it can take time.

I was visiting my cousins in South Carolina and noticed one of the younger kids struggling with her homework. Without even thinking about it I stepped in and helped her out. The next day she got an A on her exam. Apparently she has ADHD and has been struggling with that class all year. They've been trying to find her a tutor but had no luck, so after hearing them say "you should be a tutor" for the last three days I decided to finally get out there and do it for real.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Going into tutoring you should keep in mind what it is you're looking for. Do you need help understanding a concept, or do you just need someone to motivate you and keep track of you while you do your work?

Depending on the complexity of the subject I'll do $10-20 per hour. That will increase slightly for in person lessons depending on how far I'd have to drive.
