About Shannon

In December 2019, I graduated from the University of California, Merced (UCM) with a degree in Computer Science and Engineering and a minor in Applied Mathematicical Sciences.

From November 2017 to May 2020, I worked as a tutor at The Math Center at UCM (mathcenter.ucmerced.edu). I helped run a walk-in tutoring clinic available to all undergraduate math students at the university (pre-calculus level and above). Typically 3-5 tutors would be helping 5-30 students in the center. We also held workshops for students to improve their test-taking and studying skills.

Having worked with a variety of students with different levels of ability in math, I have learned to adapt quickly to a specific student's needs. Creating the most effective tutoring experience for the student is my goal.

I graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 2015, and earned a 5 on my AP Calculus AB exam.

Additionally, I am confident in my ability to tutor elementary, middle, and high school math, as well as basic physics.

Very often when I was younger, I would find myself helping my peers with their classwork, particularly in math. I enjoy helping others, and feel I have an ability to tailor my explanations to each student. My work at The Math Center has greatly increased my experience, ability, and patience in tutoring.

In high school I received a 5 on my AP Calculus AB exam.

At the University of California, Merced (UCM) I minored in Applied Mathematical Sciences and took the following classes: Calculus II, Vector Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra & Differential Equations, Linear Analysis I, Numerical Methods, Complex Variables, Intermediate Differential Equations. I have tutored a few students at the middle- and high-school levels, but most of my experience comes from my time working at The Math Center at UCM (mathcenter.ucmerced.edu), tutoring students at the undergraduate level (pre-calculus and above).

About the lesson

Ideally, start slow. This way I can assess the student's level of ability, as well as their learning style. Once I am more familiar with the student, I can tutor them as effectively and efficiently as possible.

I like to get to know my students and have a friendly yet professional relationship with them.

In high school, I worked with students my own age, as well as a few middle-school students.

At The Math Center, I had the opportunity to work with students of all backgrounds and various ages (mostly young adults, but some older students as well). UC Merced has one of the most diverse student populations of any UC.

Make sure you and your tutor are compatible! If you don't understand the way they teach, find someone else.

When UC Merced shut down for the COVID-19 pandemic, The Math Center moved online. I am very proud of our team for making a smooth transition and continuing to serve our student body as best we can.
