About Rodney

An experienced, patient, caring tutor helping students or adults achieve higher test scores and higher grades in elementary school math, pre-algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, College Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, PreCalculus, or Physics. Coaching in the use of personal computers and career planning is also available.

Tutoring for test preparation includes: ACT, SAT, GED, HISET (new replacement for the GED), Accuplacer (math college entrance), Catholic high school placement, and ASVAB (armed services vocational aptitude).

My passion for seeing students improve their math and science skills is the reason why I love being a tutor. My preparation includes reviewing homework assigned by student's teacher or preparing special materials unique to the specific student. This preparation is at no additional charge. My goal is to always provide value and quality in each tutoring session.

For students preparing to take the Accuplacer, ACT, SAT, GED, HISET, Catholic High School Placement or ASVAB tests, I use practice tests from study guides to help the student learn the types of questions for the particular test.

My students have included those in elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. I have also tutored adults who are returning to school and needing to refresh or learn new math skills for advancing their education or career.

As I tutor, I often find that the student's fundamental math skills are weak. This is likely the key reason why they are struggling with a math or science course. While I tutor, I watch for the fundamental math skills that need improvement and provide additional instructions to help the student improve these skills.

I prefer to tutor at the Shawnee branch of the Johnson County library system. This library is at 13811 Johnson Drive near the intersection with Pflumm Road. This library is easily accessible from I-435, I-35, and Shawnee Mission Parkway. When the library is closed, I tutor at coffee shops and fast food restaurants along Shawnee Mission Parkway.

An example of a student making progress from my tutoring:

When I first met her, she was a junior in her first semester of high school. Her current grade in Algebra II was a D. After a few tutoring sessions, I realized her fundamental math skills were very weak. As we continued tutoring for the rest of the year, we focused on improving the math skills while doing her homework together. For the first semester, she finished with an A. The second semester she earned a B+. We continued meeting during her senior year as she completed College Algebra. When she graduated from high school, her math problem solving skills were excellent compared to when I began tutoring her.

As an example of helping a high school senior prepare for his last exam in College Algebra.:

I was contacted by his Mother seeking help in preparing to take the final exam for the course. He had a packet of review problems and I spent considerable time reviewing these before meeting with the boy. We met for two evenings, a total of 5 hours. He scored a 75 percent on the exam. His Mother's comments, "You were a life saver for his grade and I'm sure the outcome would have been very dismal without your skillful tutoring. We couldn't have been more pleased with how you imparted your math expertise to our son in a way that he could grasp."

My overall approach to tutoring is to be both a teacher and a mentor, being patient as I work with each student. I encourage each student to have a positive, "I CAN" attitude and help them achieve and celebrate incremental growth. The mother of a student wrote, "One of Mr. H.'s many people skills is that he has a keen sense of knowing just when to "push" our son to get more out of him and when to "back off" still keeping our son on task." This approach is same that I used in my business career while mentoring and coaching team members.

My educational background is a college degree in Math with additional courses in physics, engineering, computer applications, marketing, and teaching. My career experience includes engineering for aerospace projects, military night vision equipment, and robotic work cells in manufacturing plants. I enjoyed mentoring and teaching younger engineering and sales team members in numerous career positions.

College Degree in Math. 44 years of engineering resposibilities involving the application of math. 7 years of tutoring expereince involving all levels of math from elementary school math to high school algebra, geometry, and precalculus. I also offer tutoring for ACT, SAT, GED, HiSet, Accuplacer (junior college entrance), and ASVAB (armed services vocational battery). Many satisfield students and parents.
