About Adia
My passion is to help young people develop a strong academic foundation by encouraging their joy for reading and exploration. This passion was ignited, five summers ago, when I designed and implemented a 6-week summer reading program for 10 children who would be matriculating into 1st grade in the Fall. The students had so much fun exploring words and increasing their reading confidence.
This passion continues today as I diligently curate lesson plans that give my students opportunities to develop their reading skills and collaborate with parents in the community to help them explore ways to implement their own literacy programs at home.
Seeing students' faces light up when they have the aha moment.
I also enjoy helping to grow independence in learning, I recently collaborated with four local schools, and 2 community-based organizations to share minimal prep activities that students and parents can use at home to help their young readers degrow that joy for learning.
I have spent 15+ years helping students (as part of a program or independently) to grow their academic excellence.
I have a Masters' Degree in Reading and Literacy and have extensive experience working one-on-one or in small groups with younger students to grow their joy for reading. My reading program for younger students is very interactive. We use play and engaging activities to practice phonics, reading fluency, sight words recognition, and reading comprehension.
I can also provide Elementary and Middle school students with subject-specific support. Given the effects of COVID-19 on student learning, I am available to offer more intense support to ensure readiness when school resumes.
I have helped high school students with the college prep process (SAT/ACT prep, step-by-step help with answering the essay questions for schools and scholarship applications). I also offer targeted support to ensure college readiness.

The first step is a brief meeting with the parents to complete a short questionnaire to help us determine the type of support needed.
A short grade-level assessment on the area of concern will also be administered. This, along with any additional assessments parents may have (from school or another source) will help me devise an individualized plan for the student.
I have experience working with all age groups from Kindergarten through 12th grade. I have worked with college students and adult learners to offer subject tutoring.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I will usually ask parents to have a clear idea of what they want help with. This will help to give the first session a focus and will help to minimize the parents' frustration and stress.
