About Kate

i am highly proficient in creating hands on experiences for learning material. I find quick and easy ways to learn content without getting bogged down with overwhelming tasks.

I love working with a student and seeing their face light up when they finally understand the material. I have worked with a diverse group of learners who typically don't "like" school. I have found ways to help them see the relevance of the content and get excited about learning again.

I started as a paraprofessional in a Special Education department in a public High School. I then continued my education to become a full time teacher in the High School Setting. However, I do have experience with early education.

I am currently a Special Education teacher with a masters and sixth year in applied behavior analysis. I am familiar with strategies used to ensure comprehension. I also have six years experience working in High School classrooms. I have worked in Science and Math classrooms, as well as US History and English. However, I would say my expertise is in Math and Science. I cannot tutor for AP exams, or AP classes.

About the lesson

When I first meet the child I get to know them on a more personal level. I ask where they seem to be struggling academically, and what they hope to get out of this tutoring experience. It is then that I start to review the content to see if I can pinpoint where they are lacking. Sometimes it is just one simple concept that needs to be further explained for the whole picture to come together. I practice patience with my clients, as I know how difficult school can be when you are struggling academically.

I have worked with all adolescents throughout the High School as well as K-3.

There is a group of Chemistry students in my school who have been struggling with the content since the beginning of the year. I have started a tutoring a group after school that has grown in attendance, and improved the scores of the original three individuals significantly. The students have learned to come and seek me out for support in this area, because they are aware they can come to me and recieve the help they need.
