About Jennifer

Discover Academy is a fun-filled, online tutoring service specializing in reading and math. All tutoring sessions are held live with a licensed educator. Discover Academy is licensed to teach in all 100 counties in NC.

I enjoy helping students understand difficult material. The best moment in teaching is watching when a child has that "a-ha" moment.

I began my teaching career as a piano teacher as a freshman in college. I owned my own piano studio for many years before deciding to go back to school to obtain my Elementary Education degree. I love teaching!

I have a Bachelors of Arts degree in Elementary Education and am a licensed K-6th grade teacher in the state of North Carolina. I graduated with a 4.0 in my major from UNC-C. I have taught for approximately 3 years in public schools both as a 3rd grade teacher and as a 2nd grade math and science teacher.

About the lesson

I contact parents and have them email me what struggles their child is having in reading and/or math. I also ask the parent to tell me what motivates their child. I then spend the first 5 minutes of the first tutoring session doing different activities to gauge where the child is at in the subject. I will then focus on re-teaching weak concepts to strengthen the child's ability in the given subject.

I have worked with all types of students, including gifted students and special needs students. As a piano teacher, I worked with students from the ages of 4 through adults. As a public school elementary school teacher, I taught 3rd grade and then 2nd grade math and science.

Find a fun teacher! Learning something new will seem like work unless you find someone fun.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ensure that the tutor is qualified. Lots of people tutor who have no education or experience in teaching. Teaching is a science and an art form. Excellent teaching requires a degree in education.
