About Thomas
Hello!
I am Tom Wurm, a Middle School Math Teacher, and I am available to help tutor you in math whether you are in Elementary, Middle, or High School.
As an engineering student in college I took math courses up to Calculus 3. After graduation I decided that I wanted to share my passion for math, so I switched from engineering to a teaching career.
3 years ago I earned teaching licenses for Middle School Math & Science, and High School Math. I have been helping students find success in math ever since, and I hope I can do the same for you.
I enjoy the look of understanding my students get whenever they finally understand the concept or skill we have been working on. I enjoy being able to reach students who would previously say that they hate math. My philosophy is that everyone can like and be good at math, they just need to find the methods that work best for them. My goal is to find that method so that math finally "clicks" for you.
After I graduated college I had difficulty finding a job that fulfilled my desire to make a meaningful difference in the world. I started teaching to combine two of my passions: math, and helping others. I consider this career change one of the best decisions of my life.
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Northeastern University.
I am licensed to teach Middle School Math & Science, as well as High School Math.
I currently teach 6th grade Math, 7th grade Pre-Algebra, and 8th grade Algebra 1 at St. Augustine School in Andover, MA.

First, I like to talk to the student to assess their specific needs or areas of concern in math. I help the student review past material and find out which lessons they need to work on. Once the student is caught up on past material we can begin to work on future lessons. I like to give my students a preview of the material they will learn next in school so that they will get a better understanding of the information. They can go to class with a feeling of confidence that they will start to perform better.
I have worked with a wide variety of students with different academic needs. My first teaching job was a Special Education Teaching Assistant, where I worked with students who had various learning disabilities. I have also worked with students who typically excel in math, but who wanted to improve and prepare for advanced courses.
Find a tutor who you are comfortable working with. A good teacher will modify their approach to meet the student's needs, not force the student to adhere to their prefered teaching style. Also, you should not be afraid to ask questions. A good teacher will not be impatient with their student, and will explain something as many times as necessary to make sure the student fully understands it.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should try to identify any specific areas where extra support is needed.
