About Neil
I'm an experienced middle school teacher with focus on math and science but with background in all subject areas except foreign languages. I also have solid writing skills and editing experience as a curriculum developer.
I taught seventh and eighth grades at Cambridge Friends School for fifteen years and then at the Tower School in Marblehead for another two. I then left the classroom to create, direct, and present an environmental education program at a large public agency for fifteen years, during which time I developed curriculum and presented activities in hundreds classsrooms across Greater Boston. Finally, and following on that experience, I joined a friend to develop education materials at various grade levels, mostly on environmental subjects.
I listen carefully and patiently to students, to understand their learning styles and to meet them where they are, to help them improve their skills and gain confidence in their ability to make their own way.
B. Sc. MIT, 1968
M. Ed. UMass Boston (Boston State) 1974
I can't cite specific training. I have learned over time, and from skilled teachers I have worked with, from my own experience, (and from students themselves) to be a better listener, to be more student-centered, to build trust with learners. While struggling students may see their teachers as task masters, as adversaries, a tutor can develop a sense of partnership to can build confidence.

I spend time getting to know students, to connect with them through their interests and to learn how they see themselves as learners. Then we get down to basic business, their assignments of the day and subjects they're struggling with, to get them ready for school the next day knowing that they have done their homework. As I get a sense of their difficulties and challenges, we can begin to name those issues and to develop strategies for them. Getting assignments done, and sometimes getting organized, are often important steps in building confidence to tackle new assignments.
