About Allen
My name is Allen Tsao, and I am an online tutor for Calculus, Physics, and Electrical Engineering.
Math is a skill and like any skill, it takes practice to get better at it. I believe everyone can learn to do well in math, but for some people, it just takes more practice.
A tutor or coach like me can help you with the best ways to practice. Like a sports coach, I can show you the right way to solve problems and how to practice well.
I've been tutoring professionally since 2017, but I've been a volunteer tutor since my days studying electrical engineering at University of California Berkeley and Stanford University.
I relate best to students who are used to doing well in school, but they've started to struggle, and they're not sure how to improve. For me, I hit an obstacle in college where it was the first time I had to really learn how to study and practice to understanding something. Everyone hits an obstacle at some point, and I focus my tutoring on these skills:
Practice Problem Solving. The only way to get better at any skill is be constantly practicing.
Understand the "why". There are math rules that many students simply memorize. I focus on understanding why those rules are there. If you understand the reason behind the mathematical rule, you will remember the rule for much longer than simply trying to memorize it.
I've always loved tutoring and helping people understand difficult concepts. I used to tutor other electrical engineering students as a volunteer, and continued to volunteer tutor for various organizations while I worked full-time.
I specialize in advanced math and physics. I studied at UC Berkeley and Stanford University in Electrical Engineering, but I have always been a tutor since my undergraduate days.
I've helped over 200 students and tutored over 2000 hours. All of my AP students have passed their exams, and many got 4 and 5s in AP Physics 1, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics.
My students all have higher confidence in their classes, as well as increased test scores and grades.

I am a full-time online tutor, and all of my students have loved the online tutoring. Our sessions are done through a shared whiteboard called Bitpaper (bitpaper.io) or Zoom. It allows for video chat as well as the ability to see everything I write down.

High school, college students as well as adults returning to college.
Most of my students are taking advanced classes (AP or college level) and are usually "A" students, but they just started to struggle. They may understand their teacher, but then they confront a problem and they don't know what to do. I help make those connections and give a process on how to approach problems.
Find someone who will help you understand the material rather than just help you finish your homework or even study for an exam. Most subjects in math and physics build on top of each other. You will be surprised how many of my Calculus students struggle because they have forgotten geometry or algebra concetps.
I had a student who after a lot of preparation scored an 80% on a test, and was very distraught by it. We talked over what went wrong and it helped rebuild her confidence to where she has an A in the class again.
I had another student who had been scoring C's and low B's on her tests. After 1 session with me to prepare for the next test, she scored an 87 (her highest test score at the time), and she and the mother were thrilled.
I love seeing my students gain confidence and succeed.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Really think about what part of the process in problem solving you don't understand. It's easy to understand someone walking through a problem, but ask yourself if you understand why this step was taken versus another, and if you could repeat the process on a similar problem.

Allen is out of this world. He will tell you he can't remember something that well then derive it out of thin air (very advanced topics). I started working with Allen because I was struggling with circuit analysis. He helped me build an intuition for solving circuits and it is one of the things I do best now. Allen has always been patient with my sometimes erratic schedule, and without him, I would not only have performed worse in my courses but I would not have the actual knowledge I do of many topics. Many will find, especially at a research university, that professors will not treat teaching as their primary job - Allen got me through a few of those. He is excellent for STEM courses, and even up to senior level Electrical Engineering courses. I've tried meetings with TAs and occasionally professors, but Allen was always a better resource. Allen's mental fortitude is unmatched; this guy could literally be anything he wants to be in this world, and he is choosing to help students - he chose that because he is good at it and because he cares, and that will show.
I cannot speak highly enough of Allen’s tutoring as well as his character! He has been such a blessing not only to my daughter but also to my husband and I. We hired Allen to tutor our daughter to help her with various complex advanced mathematics and science. Not only does he have extensive knowledge in these subjects but is equally skilled at knowing how to teach them.
He was very flexible, adjusting his tutoring techniques and approaches according to our daughter’s learning style. He explained things in ways that our daughter more readily understood which built her confidence and knowledge. He was extremely patient and knew how to effectively communicate which made her feel at ease and lessened her apprehension.
He not only understood that building our daughter’s trust was key to her learning and academic growth but also recognized the importance of building my husband and I’s trust in tutoring her along with collaborating with us.
His academic expertise and commitment in tutoring our daughter helped her to achieve excellent academic outcomes as well as personal growth.
We are confident that without Allen’s help, our daughter would not have experienced the academic success and personal growth she has today. He is one of the most ethical and humble people we have ever met and genuinely cares about the success of those he tutors. His endless support is priceless and we could not ask for a better tutor!Finding Allen for my daughter was truly a blessing with a miraculous outcome. With only 2 weeks left of a Calc 2 online summer course, my daughter was failing with an unhelpful instructor and needed a C for her engineering major/required classes in the Fall. She felt hopeless, was ready to give up, and was often in tears! Allen made all the difference in the world, jumped right in, got to work and really saved the day, possibly the future of her entire educational career! He was so kind, caring, supportive and responsive to all of our needs during this stressful time. He went out of his way with availability and even gave pep talks when needed during moments of panic. His teaching skills are nothing short of golden genius, with a fast and incredibly efficient method that removes all the confusion and makes things simpler to understand so that they finally made sense. After working with my daughter almost daily for 2 weeks, I am thrilled to report that she got the C she needed!!! I highly recommend Allen and will continue to rely on his assistance for her continued success. He is worth every penny! Run to the phone and call him if you need help. There’s no one better.
He really teaches you how to think through a problem vs showing you how to do it. He also connected my confusion on some of the topics. Most importantly, he is excellent communicator.
My son feels more confident and prepared for his Calculus midterm which is fast approaching. Allen explained some of the concepts that he struggled with and now he feels he has a strong foundation for the rigor of his class. Thank you, Allen!
Allen has been tutoring both of my high school children for the past 4 months in the subjects of honors math & science. They both are very comfortable with the online tutoring as it is like he is sitting next to them. He’s flexible with his scheduling and more importantly, he’s responsive daily. Of great importance to me as a parent is Allen’s style – I didn’t want a tutor who just did coached them up on their homework. He’s proactive is preparing material that is related to the subject in an effort to make sure they truly understand the concept. He assists them with their note taking and as appropriate, prepares lists of the key points which they can review later. This has created improved scores and confidence in both of my children. I also have to say that he truly cares about them – as he asks me how they’re doing & about their grades. After a few sessions, he’s gotten to know their strengths & weaknesses which translates into more productive sessions. Allen isn’t just a tutor as he’s become a safe haven for them when they can’t figure out the material themselves or online. If they get stuck on one problem but don’t have a session planned, he encourages them to simply text it to him and he’ll respond as soon as possible and always same day. I have no complaints and only praise for Allen. If my children need tutoring in math & science into the college years, he’s the go-to guy! I rate him a 5 out of 5.

I have various program options depending on the budget. They can range from $199 for the entire year to $1900 per semester depending on the level of support they need
Many parents who hire me are very happy with how efficiently we use our time. In one instance, a parent complained that their previous tutor spent over 3 hours struggling to cover one problem. Rest assured that would never happen with me. Most of my students need only 1 hour of tutoring per week to succeed and understand the new material.
