About Viola
Hi, I'm Viola! I focus on making sure my students not only know the material, but feel like they could have invented it themselves. I find that this not only provides a strong foundation for future learning, but also results in resilient test-taking skills. I'm experienced at assessing a student's level of comfort and preparedness with different areas, and using exercises to simultaneously strengthen subject areas and basic skills such as algebraic manipulation. I also understand that with math, there are many helpful ways of understanding the same material, and love to explain multiple views to see what 'clicks' with the student.
As for my background, not only did I get a 790 on the Math SAT, I also received a 5 on the AP Calculus BC test and perfect scores on the Physics and Math 2 SAT Subject Tests. Additionally, I have attended the Canada/USA Mathcamp, a prestigious mathematical summer program. In my final year of high school I took two math courses at Harvard, and I have continued to excel in advanced mathematics.
I love seeing my students really understand the concepts they're encountering, and generally helping them succeed at their personal goals, whether or not those goals are supported in a traditional math classroom.
I started by tutoring other students through my high school, and fell in love with teaching.
