First, I'd like to have a short conversation about their struggles with the subject. Then I'd ask them to send me or show me the topic they would like help with, I will read, and prepare for them a lesson including some rest of previous material related to this topic. Then we meet to go over the material and solve problems together
All type of students.
Make sure the tutor has the material you want to go over a bit before the tutoring session. This give them the time to be extra prepared. Please, always include what you want help with specifically.
I won two awards for my contribution to the mathematical education at Rutgers University.
I felt touched when they appreciated my effort and mostly, I was very happy seeing all those students getting higher grades than they ever thought they could.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think of hiring someone for one session only, then if you feel comfortable with, hire them again. Speak to your tutor honestly about your needs.
Think of telling your tutor about the things you are struggling with and how you approached that earlier.
Share your plan on how to work through your needs, and seek the tutor's advise, they have been in the same situation at some point.
If you felt comfortable, please make sure to stay consistent, because having gaps between sessions is not helpful.
