About Mariya

I am a biology graduate with my PhD in microbiology. I am very passionate about math and science and I hope I can inspire you to also be excited about these challenging topics. I have 6 years of teaching and tutoring experiences including at the university level. My approach to tutoring and teaching is very student driven. I have found that the best way for students to learn and retain material is though hands on practice and problem solving, so these methods are heavily incorporated into my sessions.

I thoroughly enjoy working with dedicated students. I love watching that moment when the material finally clicks and the student is excited because they now understand the concept and they feel proud of their achievement. I enjoy breaking down complicated concepts into simple terms and watching students also develop this imposrtant skill. Overall, I simply enjoy the fact that as an instructor, I am able to help students move one step closer to achieveing their academic goals whatever those goals may be.

I started tutoring in high school. At that time I tutored elementary school students in reading, writing and math. I continued tutoring in college where I tutored my peers in science courses. My first teaching experience was in graduate school where I taught undergraduates molecular parasitology and research skills. After graduate school, I became a biology instructor at Georgia State Univeristy where I taught two Introduction to Biology courses and one Animal Biology course.

I have over 10 years of experience in biology including a PhD in microbiology and six years of experience teaching biology content. I also have many years of expeience using basic math and algebra.

About the lesson

Prior to meeting a new student, I like to find out their current method of study (ie. study techniques, time spent studying, etc.) and prior experince with the subject. I also like to know what the student perceives to be their strengths and weaknesses in the subject and what topics they struggle with the most. In the first session, the student and I will become aquainted and briefly discuss the topics above prior to digging into course material.

I have experience working with elementary and middle school students as well as undergraduate students. I work best with dedicated students who really strive to improve and understand course material.

When looking to hire a biology or math teacher, be sure the teacher not only helps you learn the content but also helps you develop effective study techniques. This is important as you can use these techniques to learn new material you encounter throughout the rest of your life. Also find a teacher who enjoys the topics they are teaching, this makes all the difference.

Before reaching out to a teacher, it is important to reflect on your needs. Sessions are most effective if you come prepared with specifics. Ask yourself: What topics are giving me the most trouble? What do I not understand? Are there sources of practice problems? What techniques am I currently using to study the material?

Details

Sessions cost $40 an hour. Sessions are virtual but in person sessions may be available for students living in the Roswell, Perimeter or Alpharetta areas in Georgia.

Refunds are not granted for cancelled session; however, missed sessions may be rescheduled as long as notice is given 48 hours prior to the missed session.

Sessions begin and end at the scheduled time. Late arrivals cut into your student's time so please be punctual.
