About Leland

I've tutored students in every subject, at every grade level. I put concepts ahead of computations - once students understand the topics, calculations come naturally. Among tutors, there is a difference between those who merely know the material and those who can communicate it. I know that difference.

I love seeing someone finally understand a concept they've been struggling with. Seeing someone's mental effort pay off is wonderful.

I was naturally drawn to teaching as I grew up. In class I would explain concepts to my peers who were struggling. When my high school did not have a math club, I started one. My first job was tutoring for $12 an hour at my neighborhood library. I've just always gotten a kick out of seeing someone finally understand a concept!

Since 2012, I have tutored students of all ages and many different backgrounds in grade levels ranging from elementary school to undergraduate college. I've even been a TA at UC Santa Cruz, where I have lectured for hundreds of people at one time. Also at UC Santa Cruz, I have taken courses in effective teaching from educational professionals.

About the lesson

I always start by asking my students to explain everything they understand, as they understand it. This practice is at the core of my teaching philosophy, as it forces the student to engage with and mentally organize the concepts. This accelerates learning dramatically.

I have taught students as young as 10 years old and as old as 20, in topics ranging from "multiplication by 10" to advanced college calculus. I have taught students from humble and privileged backgrounds, students from America and abroad. I have taught students with physical and mental health challenges and students for whom English is a second language.

Forget about titles and degrees!

Details

My first lesson is always half-price ($25 per hour). This is because I want you to get a sense of how I work without any financial pressure. Continuing lessons are then $50 per hour, and meeting times are generally very flexible.
