About Eric

Teaching math throughout the year is a wonderful experience! However, working with students one on one, gives them a chance to make real strides in their learning. This growth is incredibly motivation for all parties.

I use a simple pre assessment tool, along with information from families, and the student to create a plan for math improvement and confidence. The use of manipulatives, drawings and diagrams, competition, and progression towards math goals, are some of the methods I’ll use to ensure your child feels success right away.

I have an elementary education degree and a middle school math license (license #408817), and am certified in reading. I have received training in many approaches to math instruction including: problem solving, standards-based, and conceptual. I have 15 years of experience teaching students of all backgrounds, and look forward to helping your child develop a love of mathematics!

I chose teaching before my junior year of college. I had always enjoyed being around, and interacting with kids, and it seemed like a positive career choice. I was also raised by two former educators. My first job was teaching middle school math in Minneapolis. I then taught fourth grade in Eden Prairie for three years, 1 year at a Charter School in Minneapolis, and I'm currently in my twelth year with St. Paul Schools.

I have a degree in Elementary Education (K-6), with a concentration in middle school math (5-8). I have a Master's Degree in Teaching and Learning, and a K-12 Literacy Certification. I have 15 years of teaching middle school math, 3 years teaching 4th grade, and a plethora of years teaching summer school at various levels.

The first, and most critical part, is understanding what the student/family wants to get out of the tutoring experience - homework help, specific skills, study habits, etc. I will also need to understand the student's current performance. This information could come from the family (assessment scores/grades), standardized testing scores, or an assessment that I give the student. Finally, we'll need to decide on a schedule, communication preference to the student/family, and tutoring location*.

*Until COVID-19 is no longer a public health crisis, I will only offer virtual tutoring.

I've worked with all grades from kindergarten through high school, but my main experience is with middle grades. I have also worked in both urban and suburban settings.

Before you hire them, ask them about their professional experiences, both ones they are proud of, and ones they wish they could change. Also, ask them how they intend to help you (the student).

I am especially fond of any experience (to me or others) where people do simple things to help each other out. The times we are living in now are providing plenty of opportunities like this. Whether is it something simple like holding the door, paying for someone's items, or donating to a cause you believe in.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Tutors cost money and time, which can be in short supply. Ask yourself, "Is this something I need, will use to improve, and can go into with a positive attitude?
