About Barbara chambers

I have 24 years experince teaching special education students in a brick and mortar classroom and 5 years exerience teaching English online to students in China. I began each year with students arriving in my classroom frustrated and struggling. I believe building a relationship and trust with the student is the first step to getting them ready to learn.I let my students know I believe in their ability to succeed academically and overall and I make this message clear. I tell them, on a regular basis, “I believe in you! You can do this! I won’t give up on you!” I mean what I say to my students and my sincerity and compassion are evident. My energy, persistence, and patience serves to motivate my student’s to apply themselves and not give up. And then it happens. The most thrilling moment for both teacher and student. The AHA moment , when the light bulb turns on and they get it whatever strategy or concept we had been working on. And the we celebrate!

Each student learns differently. There is no cookie cutter appraoch in my classroom. It is my job as an educator to determine how each of my students learns best, and to teach them strategies that they can use to help them achieve their full academic potential.My students know that I believe in them, today, tomorrow, and always.

About the lesson

The initial tutoring session is perhaps the most important tutoring session. I know meeting a new tutor can be daunting. I will diagnose academic performance and determine my students strengths and weaknesses, all while trying to establish personal rapport. I will spend about five to ten minutes just getting to know the student.I will ask questions about interests, what things motivate or excite the student, life at school, TV shows or books that interest them, etc. I do this to get a sense of who the student is and to also to make sure that he/she is comfortable talking with me. I want the student to feel free to share with your with me things he/she like about school, what sports or instruments you play, etc.
