About Richard
Teaching has been integral to my jobs as an Engineer for NASA with the space shuttle. I have mentored Technicians and Engineers in techniques and algorithms to make their job more successful.
I celebrate your successes and efforts to learn difficult subjects. I am an Electrical Engineer who teaches practicle ideas not theory.
Sometimes the tutoring goes beyond the subject. My favorite tutoring lasted ony ten minutes. I discovered that the young man was hiding a blindness in his left eye. I had him share this problem with his parents and they scheduled surgery to repair a torn retina. He went from F's to A's by my paying attention to the student, not just teaching a subject.
I have been a volunteer tutor for many years and was hired as an Adjunct Professor where I taught for eighteen years. I was not hired because I was a brilliant teacher but because I demonstrated I was being a caring person.
I have a bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, A Masters Degree in Computer Information Systems, and many credit hors at PHD Math. I did not pursue a PHD even though I had straight A's. I dislike Math as a Philosophy and prefer a hands on Math approach.

I attempt to determine the skill level of the student. I treat everyone as an individual and not a cookie cutter teaching style. I am known to explain a concept in multiple ways using words, manipulatives, games, and puzzles to enhance the learning.
I have worked with students from the grade three level to PHD candidates. I can teach multiple subjects and am not limited to just Mathematics.
Try to find one nearby. The tutor should also be willing to take telephone calls for a confusing problem at no charge.
In working with a nine year old boy he had failed third grade and third grade summer school. He was promoted to fourth grade despite his lack of achievement. His mid semester grades were published and He had achieved two B's and five A's. You never know what excites the learning process and the Aha moment is a glorious event.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The Student needs to read through the chapter when attempting the homework. If the chapter is confusing a Tutor is needed.

Perfect! I hired Richard to help with my son’s accelerated summer Geometry 2 Honors class. My sons grade improved an entire letter grade in the course of about three weeks and he finished the class with a mid B, testing out of the course before he even started his freshman year. Richard is incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and skilled at working with teens. He treats his students with the utmost respect and earns their trust and respect in return. We intend to continue working with him next year, to help keep my son track and grades strong.
Perfect! What an asset for our students! With an exceedingly calm demeanor and endless patience Mr. Preston is a great tutor. Immediately he made my son feel comfortable and methodically evaluated areas for improvement and seamlessly implemented a participative approach that lead him to conclusions rather than just solving problems and hoping my son would learn without the work. Especially effective was Mr. Preston's ability to distill complex mathematical problems (Geometry/Calculus) to more easily understandable functions. We are very impressed and even more grateful for the professional and compassionate tutoring from Mr. Preston. My son improved his SAT score substantially and will be heading to college in the spring a better student.
Perfect! Mr. Preston is very patient. He is very good at explaining how to do problems and having the process make sense. He also KNOWS his stuff!
