About Raja

After teaching Differential and Integral Calculus as well as Engineering courses, I have an excellent idea about how to make the subject matter interesting for students. My degrees (two master's and PhD, all in Engineering) as well as experience as an engineering professional, have helped me master the practical aspects of Mathematics. I help the students understand the concept, its applications (generally to engineering problems) and help them practice with both in-class example problems and homework. Not many other tutors know the engineering aspects of Mathematics, especially at higher level, such as Calculus, but I do.

I enjoyed teaching at Bangalore University as well as Iowa State University, and I really wanted to switch over to academics; which is why I earned my PhD in Mechanical Engineering. However, due to personal problems, I could not work on my PhD until I was in my late 50's. By that time, I had timed myself out of a career in academia. This is my opportunity to start enjoying teaching, help students understand the concepts, get interested in Mathematics and achieve academic success in their future.

I have always liked teaching and I would like to continue to do so.

I have taught Differential Calculus for three semesters  and Integral Calculus for one semester at Iowa State University. I have also taught engineering courses such as Mechanics of Materials, Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery and Materials Science at Bangalore Institute of Technology. Further, I have designed and taught Statistical Process Control at Belmont Industries, the company I worked for before joining Ford Motor Company. I have also worked with my two sons and helped them improve their math skills.

After talking with the student about his/her interests, strengths and weaknesses, and future plans, I start off with a diagnostic test to find out the student's strengths and weaknesses. After that, I will come up with a plan to bring the student to the level that he/she needs to be at, and later, keep him/her a few steps ahead of the class.

From very bright students to those that are not strongly motivated. Students come with a wide range of interest, intelligence and aptitude levels. A few students went on to participate in national level competitions and sometimes win them, but on the other hand, a few others felt that they could not handle the mathematical rigor of Calculus and dropped out of the class. Generally the students who dropped out were bright students, but Math was not for them.

Make sure your teacher loves Mathematics, is very patient and is prepared to go the extra length to ensure your success. Qualifications and experience are important, but without the drive to help the students succeed, the teacher cannot make a difference in helping the student succeed.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before talking to the teachers about their needs, the student should explore the teacher's qualifications, experience and aptitude for teaching. Is this teacher capable of teaching in an interesting way? Has the teacher mastered the subject matter himself/herself? Is the teacher a patient person, who won't get frustrated?
