About George

I enjoy helping students figure out the correct way to solve Math problems. I use a variety of techniques, strategies, and methods to find the way that works best for the individual, not a textbook "This is how you solve it" approach.

I have been a Special Education teacher for the past 6 years. Prior to that, I worked for the same school district as an Academic Interventionist (both Certified and Uncertified) and as a Substitute Teacher.

Teaching is actually something I wanted to do since High School. After graduating, however, I joined the U.S. Navy where I spent the next 10 years. After my discharge, having a family to provide for I decided to not go to college and instead entered the workforce. It wasn't until 2010 I began my first college course at Itawamba Community College.

About the lesson

I like to review school records, such as report cards, diagnostic/placement assessments to find out where the student currently stands, but I don't rely soley on those. I administer my own set of diagnostics to determine where the deficiencies are and how we need to fix the problem. I do use a variety of techniques and teaching methods, depending on what works best for the student, and I do frequent progress checks to ensure the student is growing as we go.

Special Education students are my main student group, so I have worked extensively with learning disabilities, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum. I have also worked with Dyslexia affected students and pushed into the general education classrooms to assist students there.

Math is a fun subject for me, but many students fear it. If you can face that fear and try to make math fun, not only will you find you can enjoy it, it becomes easier to understand. Instead of saying, "I can't" train yourself to say "I can't YET, but I can learn", then do it.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I'm not sure a student should think through a question before asking it. Review your attempts at solving it and make sure you have followed the steps as close as possible, but if you try to think through a question before asking it, a majority of the time you will talk yourself out of asking it. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

Details

Pricing will be based on how many hours per week services are needed. I understand the need for students to learn and grow academically and the strugges many students have. I also understand what it costs to provide for a family, so I try to keep my rates as low as possible. Since I am just beginning tutoring, my rates will be $15.00 per hour plus travel expenses if I come to the student. The most convenient format for me will be online, but I can and will travel if needed.
